Hi there, I have a Maxtor 20.4 GB hard drive that I wish to use as a primary master in a PC that I built.I cannot seem to remember the jumper setting for this such drive. It will be the only hard drive in the system(without a slave drive). It just has no diagram(which I am used to seeing)....grrrrr. Can you help me out please?

If this is an IDE/PATA hard drive then the jumper settings are marked on the circuit board. MA = master SL = slave CS = cable select If this hard drive is the one installed on the Primary IDE controller the the jumper has to be set to Master. If it won't boot up then the jumper needs to be set to Cable select.
If this hard drive is a second hard drive and is connected to the 2nd connector on the IDE data cable that is connected to the primary IDE controller then the jumper must be set to Slave.
If this hard drive is a second hard drive and is connected to the secondary IDE controller and there is no other drive on the IDE data cable other than this hard disk the the jumper can be set to either Master or Slave. If there is a CD drive on this cable too then the drives on this data cable then the jumpers on each drive must be set differently, they cannot be set the same jumper setting.
Floydage, some ribbons are different in the orentation of pin#1. try a differnent cable...but you said that you tried that right.? have you tried to make sure you have the latist BIOS. It could be this paticuler drive have a different bios it self...and yes drive's do have chip's and software in them. If nothing ells just load the OS to that drive anyway and than change the drive letters in windows.
First, never use a Maxtor HDD as a slave to a CDROM/DVD, doesn't work and tends to cause stability issues. So try swapping the jumper on the CD/DVD to slave and setting the Maxtor to Master, this should get it working.
Second, if it is showing up as 33GB, you have the Jumpers set to limit capacity(designed to avoid troubles on older systems. If this is the case, you likely have a single jumper in the center row of pins between the power and data cables. If it only works as master at the moment, then you likely have the neter row(limit size pins) and the one closest to the data cable(Master Pin) both plugged in.
Change your DVD/CD to slave, remove the limiting jumper and ensure the Master jumper is installed on the Maxtor, then be sure the end connector on the ATA(likely marked master) is plugged into the Maxtor and the middle connector(Slave) is plugged into the DVD/CD, this should have you all fixed up.
Use a partition manager to see if the drive is recognized. If it is not recognized, you may not have the jumper setting correct. If it is a master drive, set the jumper for master drive. same for slave or cable select
setup the first drive as slave ( sometimes No Jumper ) then the furthest away drive as Master.
If this fails, and you have 2 IDE Slots on the motherboard. ( Primary/Secondary ) Put 1 drive on primary as Slave. And DVD Rom As Master ( same Cable ) Then put second drive On Secondary IDE Slot. ( Set As Master Or Slave )
If none of these solutions Work For you, check to see if Both Channels are activated in the Bios.
how many pins in that hard drve?..let me analyze to you this, if the hard is in front of you, you'll see the connection of the ide cable and power cable, then the jumper setting pins is in your left,am i right?..so the pins is figure like this, : : : .,is that right?..the first pin(from top to bottom)is the master, and second one, is the slave and the last is cable select..
