Connecting DVD to RCA Television

I use Direct TV and connect their receiver to a model L32WD22 flat screen RCA HD TV using a HDMI cable and this works fine. I connected a toshiba dvd modelD-R4SU using RCA type cables and I do get the menu for programing but nothing else. I have used the instruction books of Direct TV, RCA , and Toshiba but nothing works. Wh am I doing wrong?
