I was given an emachine T2742, I turned it on and it worked for a little while and then went off by itself. I can hear and see the fan running. It will not come on but will continue to try to start. ...

After running can you feel any heat around the CPU heatsink? Does the CPU fan run at all?
Is it trying to restart and then looping back to reboot?

Try to access the Bios (press Del as soon as it switches on) see if you can get to the bios screen, see how long it will stay in the Bios screen before switching off or rebooting. If the bios has a hardware monitor, see what the temp of the CPU is. 30 degrees to 40 degrees is normal

Then switch off, unplug the Optical drives, the hard drive and floppy drive in turn, try to reboot and see if it is stable with just the hard drive installed.

IF the CPU heatsink remains cool after all that, the issue is with a dead CPU or a blown component on the motherbiard

RAM compatibilty

No, DDR 400 will not work. The best thing you can do is call Dell and give them your information. Model number and that kind of information and let them tell you what kind of ram you need. If you put the wrong type of ram in your machine it could cause major damage. There are so many different kinds of memory out there, not to mention high and low denisity. Your machine may use PC2700 high density and if you try to use PC2700 low density it will not work. One other thing that you can try is uninstall a stick of your ram and write down everything on the stickers and then go to some place like kingston memory and use their memory locator to find what you need.

Emachine T2742 wouldnt start, new powersuplly installed green board light on but still no response. switched out ramstick, stiil nothing. switched out main processer still no.hard drive OEM is ok what...

First Pull cmos cell from motherbord for 10 minutes because sometimes low voltage of cmos cell creates this problem .
After remove cmos cell from motherbord for sometime your bios settings goes to defaults.
Then check.
Also check that smps is work fine .
It is square box on back side of cpu .
Reattch ATX power connector from smps to motherbord.
Also make sure that motherbord surface not touch the cabinet.Check motherbord in outside of cpu .

Let me know if you need more assistanse.

Emachine t2742 I also have a wiring problem!

It's ironic that you ask me this question today-- i am just now carrying in another eMachine computer to fix. Anyway, unfortunately I do not have one that is the same model as yours (T2742). However, I did some quick research and found that yours has the same exact motherboard as the T2898 which I made the diagram for!

The following eMachine models share the same motherboard (and thus the same front panel layout):
T2742 T2796 T2798 T2824 T2885 D2823 T2862 T2896 T2898 T2958

For further reference, I would like to share this diagram for the eMachines T6544 in case someone else may need this model. This is the computer I just carried in... might as well share.
By the way, the power switch doesn't need to be oriented any particular way (positive and negative), which is why the switches are not labeled as + or -. Switches can be wired either way and they will work the same.

Hope this helps.

according to this ( the dual core is not an option. I'm not sure if that means that Dell doesn't offer an upgrade, or if it's not possible. First, open your tower and look over the Motherboard for the manufacturer and model. Once you have those, google them and look for the specs of what cpu's are supported by that motherboard. If you can and do decide to upgrade, check with the CPU manufacturer to see how strong of a power supply you need for the more powerful CPU. You're might be ok, but you might need to upgrade the PSU (Power supply) with the processor. From your description, I can't tell what motherboard is in your Dell. That will be the limiting factor. Get the motherboard specs and you'll know what you can do.
