I've got an old Gateway desktop I need to connect to a wireless router for my job. I just bought a new, much stronger NetGear router and it still won't connect. I no longer have a laptop and I'm DESPERATE...

Unless you've installed a wireless card in your old desktop you will never connect wirelessly.
Desktops don't come equiped to do wireless communications. And an "old Gateway" surely does not have those capabilities.

You have 2 options
1) Purchase and install a wireless card for your Gateway

2) Use it hard wired... Purchase an "Ethernet cable" of sufficient length and plug it into one of the open ports on the back of the router and into the only place it will fit on the back of your computer

Uplink internet (PPPoE) will not be accessible after power cut

You are using the PPPOE connection. when you set up the router for the PPPOE connection, Do you see Internet IP address on the status page of the router.
If you have the internet IP address on the status page of the router then that is a very good thing. make sure that it shows the Internet connection type pppoe on the status page also.
your computer are communicating with each other they have the IP address that is a good thing also.
Now you can check the internet connection.
open the command prompt ( START ==> RUN == type cmd and click OK) In the command prompt try to ping the router IP address.
Suppose your router IP address is then in the command prompt type " ping " and hit ENTER on your key board.
You will get replies from the same IP address that is
that means the connection between the computer and the router is working properly.
Now type in the command " ping " and hit enter.
If you get the 4 replies from that means you computer is communicating with the DNS servers. If you get the reply form different number or if you do not get replies that means the router is not set up properly or user name and password for the pppoe might not be proper.
Now you got 4 replies from
Then type the command " ping" and hit enter.
Now check if you get replies from ( there might be replies from the number 66.x.x.x. or 207.x.x.x).
If you get the replies then everything is working properly. the issue might be with the firewall or internet browser.
Now if you don't get replies from but getting replies from that means you will need to assign static DNS numbers on the computer.
In preferred DNS =
in alternate DNS =
that will resolve the issue.

Slowed internet connection using wireless router...

Wired connections are faster than equivalently wireless connections (from/to the same node) and so your
experienced is quite normal.

Additional nodes divide the original bandwidth and denigrate the performance, which is why one tries to
maximize the original bandwidth (speed in MHz) of the connection to the gateway.

You can maximize your experience by having critical systems wired to the router, and this also provides
greater security than any encryption (which is another brake on your speed) necessary for a wifi

Make sure you have the fastest possible wifi card in your portable devices to maximize your speed.

DSL connection

Wow, that router is at least 4 years old. I have not seen a working 2wire 1000hw for about 2 years. I would purchase an aftermarket modem at best buy or off of ebay if you want to go cheap. I have worked for ATT for about 10 years. Hope this helps

Cannot connect second computer to my networn

I have listed several things here that you can use to find the problem. Sorry this is so problems can be very tedious to find.

First check your version of Windows:
Double click on "My Computer", then click on "View System Information" to make sure you have at least Service Pack 1...or better yet....Service Pack 2.

Next check your Windows XP network settings:
Click on Start....Control Panel....Network Connections...Local Area Connection...Properties(button). Scroll down the list to find Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) and click on it to highlight it. Now click the properties button below the list. You should now be able to click the small buttons to select both of the "Obtain....automatically" choices for IP address and DNS server. Click on "OK" to close each of the windows.

Now you can test your computer to see if it is "talking" to the router: Click on Start...Run...and type "cmd" in the small box and click "OK". This will open a black command window where you tell the computer what to do. Type the command "ipconfig" and press return (enter). This will list your ip address, subnet mask, and default gateway. Make a note of the default gateway address so you can use it for the next test. If the IP address begins with 192.168...then your computer is probably communicating with the router okay. If your IP address is blank or starts with 169...then your network connection to the router may NOT be working.

The final test!!! Use the default gateway address from the last step to do a "ping" test. In the black command window...type "ping" followed by the default gateway address. For example: IF the default gateway happens to be type the ping command this way: ping

If the result is a list of replies from the gateway address...great!! Your network connection is working. If the ping command results in a list of "request timed out", or something else, then your network connection needs more help.

The ultimate test is to try using the Internet with your browser.
If this works, next try typing your gateway address into the brower address bar. It should connect you to the router setup page.(?)

Let me know the results of each of these tests, and I'll be happy to assist you further, if needed.

Need more information! Sometimes the problem runs deeper! How old is your computer, do you have windows XP or Windows 2000, Do you have multiple computers setup, are your running wireless, do you have anti-virus programs running, spyware programs, firewall programs other than XP internal firewall? I may have an answer for you to resolve this issue!
