I have just chatted with a somebody from Sony support, who directed me to this site:
There you can place your order for a free repair in the US. The offer is available so far until March 30, 2009. You are only responsible for the shipping (15 usd).

Thank you, thank you guys - all who posted about the free repair on the TSC-1 camera. And for the ready phone number. It was a breeze and Sony agreed to have mine shipped in for repair. Looks like the CCD issue as well.

This is so helpful! I live in Spain, the camera is there but I am still in the US... so I will just need to find the customer service contact number in Spain and will inquire for this. I was already losing hope about my camera.... I really hope there's also a local service area in Spain.
Anyhow, I called the US customer service and they did verify to me that this is a known issue that is covered by Sony's free service outside warranty.

Sony has repaired my cybershot. Was a CCD fault. To "Guest" who posted on Apr 6, 2008. The point is that the repair of this fault is offered to all owners "Out of Warranty"or not, as this is a known fault. It is on the sony website under support / announcements in writing. Look it up print it out and tell them to fix your camera just like they have for everyone else around the world. AD (New Zealand)

High, John again. I just got off of the phone with the folks at Sony. They said that it was an image sensor problem and are sending me an address label to send the camera in for repair. (at no charge).
Their number is (888) 476-6972. The call took several minutes, so get comfy and be patient.

I found on the sony website under support / announcements (for sony dsc-t1 and some other models). There is a known fault with a component that causes this "black screen". Sony have offered an out of warranty, free repair through local service centres. As yet I have not contacted my local centre as it's Sunday (closed). But am hoping this is still applicable. Hope this is helpfull to all concerned.

Save hours of searching online or wasting money on unnecessary repairs by talking to a 6YA Expert who can help you resolve this issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
Here's a link to this great service
