try changing the needle---flat side goes to the back side of the machine also check the top tension depending on the fabric your sewing on--the needle & thread have to work with the fabric--example light fabric needs a different needle & thread than a heavy fabric check to see if the thread is coming off the thread take up lever when you sew.
Clean out the bobbin area if there are any thread tangles there.
Refer to the maintenance section of the manual - see the configuration of the bobbin case and shuttle race? The bobbin case as an extending arm and the race a notch. When inserting the bobbin case into the shuttle, turn the handwheel so the needle is at it's highest position. Then lift the lever on the back of the bobbin case and insert the cast into the shuttle, arm pointing straight up toward the bed of the sewing machine.
Now thread the machine with the presser foot up - always - and see if the tangling stops.
When you forget to lift the presser foot before threading the machine, the tension control does not open to capture the thread. Then when you begin to sew, the top thread has no tension, and the bobbin thread, which does have tension, pulls the top thread to the bottom in messy loops.
Be absolutely sure that the machine is threaded correctly, with the upper thread clicked into the tension discs (the presser foot MUST be raised when you thread so the tensions discs are open to receive the thread) and bobbin thread clicked into the bobbin tension slot. Change the needle - a bent or blunt needle can cause tangles. Hold onto the thread tails for two or three stitches when you first start sewing to avoid them being drawn down under the fabric and making a mess.
Make sure the bobbin thread is feeding in the correct direction from the bobbin spool and through the guide on the bobbin case.
Take hold of the end of the top thread and lower, then raise the needle to pull the bobbin thread up.
Take hold of both thead ends and pull them under the presser foot and to the back of the machine.
Place fabric under the presser foot. Lower and hand walk the first couple of stitches.
When sewing, and you need to stop to adjust the fabric, make sure the needle is down into the fabric. This will keep the stitch from malformation and causing a possible tangle.
If you need a manual, you can download one free at the Brother website.
Get out the manual and start with maintenance so you can be sure the bobbin area is clean.
Now start at the beginning of the manual.
Read and apply as you wind the bobbin and place it into the bobbin case.
Thread the machine - again - read and apply.
Pictures and graphics are very helpful but don't always highlight some of the important steps.
CAN"T FIND THE MANUAL -
Remove the bobbin-case and clean away any thread the may have tangled there.
Make sure the thread is tight and even on the bobbin,
If this is a vertial bobbin/metal bobbin case, the thread winds from the bobbin clockwise and then through the opening on the side of the bobbin case and under the guide just above the opening.
Lift the needle to it's highest position and then lift the lever on the bobbin-case and hold it open as you insert the bobbin-case into the shuttle.
If this is a drop-in, horizontal bobbin, the graphic on the plastic lid covering the bobbin will indicate which way the thread feeds from the bobbin and through the guides.
Replace the needle, with the flat side of the shank facing the back of the machine.
Lift the presser foot and re-thread the machine. IMPORTANT - always have the presser foot up when threading.
Hold onto the thread end, lower and raise the needle to pull up the bobbin thread, Take both thread ends under the presser foot and to the back of the machine.
Place a double layer of fabric under the presser foot. Hold onto the thread ends and lower the needle into the fabric for the first stitch.
First, open the needle plate and make sure the bobbin area is clean and free of lint and thread.
Check the needle to make sure it is not bent and is properly inserted into the holder - usually with the flat side facing to the back of the machine.
Refer to your manual for bobbin insertion to be sure the thread is feeding from the bobbin in the correct direction and through the proper guides.
Always thread a sewing machine with the presser foot up. This opens the tension control and allows the thread to properly enter.
When the foot is down, the tension control closes to the sewing setting and if the thread is not in place, there is no tension on the thread and it gets loopy.
After threading, lower and raise the needle while holding onto the thread tail. This will pull the bobbin thread up through the needle plate. Take hold of both threads and take them under the presser foot and to the back of the machine.
Hand walk the first stitch when sewing and this should keep the top and bottom thread from tangling.
When stopping to change the position of the fabric (turning a corner, sewing a curved seam for example), do so with the needle down into the fabric. This not only anchors the fabric so it does not slip, but prevents mis-stitching.
If you are doing everything according to the manual and are still having a problem, the machine may need to be professionally serviced.
I am not sure what is happening. But this is what I woudl try:
Open the needle plate, remove the bobbin and bobbin case and clean away any lint or thread that may have accumulated there.
Re-thread - always with the presser foot up.
Re-place the needle with a new one.
If this is a vertical bobbin (inserts at the side or front of the machine and not a drop-in) make sure the lever on the bobbin case is held open when you insert the bobbin & bobbin case into the shuttle.
When you need to adjust the fabric (rounding a curve or turning a corner), make sure the needle is down through the fabric before lifting the presser foot. If you do not, there will be a mis-stitch and sometimes the thread will tangle in the area of the bobbin.
are you doing embroidery? if so turn off jump stitch cutting if possible. is the machine threaded correctly (pull needle thread out of machine and thread again with presser foot raised.
check for foreign matter in needle tension assembly. ensure there is sufficient needle thread tension.
the thread you see caught up underneath the fabric will be needle thread and indicates insufficient needle thread tension or something preventing the needle thread from being pulled up into the fabric (maybe a damaged bobbin case, or bobbin case position finger, or damaged needle plate hole).
