When I turn on camera it makes a ping ping ping sound

the screen is blank, the lens comes out, I can switch it to view photos and that works ok. if I go back to shoot mode the lens comes out further then goes back to about half way. The battery is fully charged. It is hard to turn off but does eventually. The menu only works in view mode. I have`nt dropped it or got it wet, infact up to 10 minuts before it started to play up it was working perfectly well.........HELP
