Question about Pitney Bowes 9920 Plain Paper Fax

1 Answer

Fax nightmare!!! Hi experts, My buddy had a Brother fax machine and asked me to look at it. When you pick up the handset the line sounded ok but after a few seconds the line would give the engaged tone. Hanging up the handset made no difference the engaged tone persisted. By restarting the fax it was ok until you lift the receiver again. We can dial the number and the fax rings and answers but try to either lift the receiver or send a fax using on hook dialling and the line picks up and is almost immediately engaged. A normal phone works ok in this socket, I tried 2 different phones. He has a DSL line so I plugged in a DSL filter, same problem. I remembered a previous problem I has some time back and it was the phone cable that what wrong so I got a replacement from Brother, no joy there either. The fax is a multi function type, so he said he'd just buy a normal cheap fax machine for faxing and use the other for printing scanning etc. as we both assumed at this stage that there was some damage maybe by a lightning stike to the telephony bits. New fax just arrived and he plugged it in, SAME bloomin problem. He has two phones in his house and one dsl modem. The phones all work fine.Help!

Same problem as kcolg34's Fax nightmare. Have an HP multi function Printer, copier, fax. Fax worked as supposed to on initial set up. Moved the unit and and plugged in again. Fax couldn't detect dialling tone. Checked all phones in house and same problem. Tone was engaged tone/ or similar in sound to this. Tried cordless and wired phones all had same double tone. Have tried replacing connecting cords and plugging Fax connection direct into telephone socket. Even replaced ADSL filters without effect. Calls can still be made out and received in but engaged style tone still persists.

Trying to get a response from BT in any shape or form is a waste of time. Hope someone out there can help.

If you have a BT line and use the 1571 answering facility , when you have a message waiting the dialling tone changes from a constant tone to a split tone. This is to let you know that you have one or more messages waiting.

In order to get the dialling tone to revert to the constant tone you have to deal with the waiting messages in accordance with the options provided i.e Save, Listen Again or Delete. BT say the Split Tone is to let subscribers know when they have a message waiting. This should resolve the Fax problem.

It certainly worked for my phone/fax system.

Good Luck

How do I receive faxes with the 240c

Hi,

Manual mode turns off all automatic answering functions unless you are using the Distinctive Ring feature or you are using an external answering machine on the same line as the Brother machine.

*Distinctive Ring is a function of your Brother machine that allows a person with one line to receive fax and voice calls through two different phone numbers on that one line. Brother uses the term "Distinctive Ring," but telephone companies market the service under a variety of names, such as Custom Ringing, Personalized Ring, Smart Ring, Ring Master, Ident-a-Ring, Ident-a-Call, Data Ident-A-Call, Teen Ring, SimpleBiz Fax & Alternate Number Ringing and BT Call Sign.
  1. Setting the Receive Mode
    1. Press Menu.
    2. Press the up or down arrow key to select Initial Setup.
    3. Press OK.
    4. Press the up or down arrow key to select Receive Mode.
    5. Press OK.
    6. Press the up or down arrow key to select Manual.
    7. Press OK.
    8. Press Stop/Exit.

Receiving Faxes in Manual Mode
  1. Lift the handset of a telephone that is on the same line as your Brother machine.
  2. When you hear the sending machine's fax tones (short beeps that occur at regular intervals), do one of the following:
    • If the telephone you answered is near your Brother machine or connected to its EXT jack(socket), press Black(Mono) Start or Color(Colour) Start.
    • If the telephone you answered is not connected to or near your Brother machine, press *51 (*91 for New Zealand) on its dial pad.
  3. Your Brother machine will produce receiving tones.
  4. Replace the telephone handset. Your Brother machine will begin to receive the fax.

< Easy Receive (Fax Detect) >
The Easy Receive (Fax Detect) feature allows you to receive faxes in Manual Mode by simply lifting the handset of a telephone that is on the same line as the Brother machine. Your Brother machine will automatically generate fax receiving tones, at which point you can replace the telephone handset and wait for your fax to be received and printed.

Your Brother machine's Easy Receive (Fax Detect) feature is turned ON by default. To adjust your Brother machine's Easy Receive (Fax Detect) setting, please follow these steps:

  1. Press Menu.
  2. Press the up or down arrow key to select Fax.
  3. Press OK.
  4. Press the up or down arrow key to select Setup Receive.
  5. Press OK.
  6. Press the up or down arrow key to select Easy Receive or Fax Detect.
  7. Press OK.
  8. Press the up or down arrow key to select On, Semi or Off. *In some brother machines, Semi may not be in the options.
If you choose Semi, your Brother machine will only answer an incoming fax if you answer using its handset or by pressing the Hook, Hook/Hold, Hold, Speaker Phone or Tel/R key on its control panel.
  9. Press OK.
  10. Press Stop/Exit.

Note Here are a couple of points to keep in mind:
  • If Easy Receive (Fax Detect) is ON, but your Brother machine doesn't automatically answer the incoming fax when you lift the extension telephone's handset, press *51 (*91 for New Zealand).
  • If you send faxes from a computer that is on the same telephone line as the Brother machine and the Brother machine intercepts the calls, turn Easy Receive (Fax Detect) OFF.

Please post your feedback and Vote if the problem resolved as per your satisfaction.

Multifunction phone/fax/copier machine

Hi sythonk
1. Make sure you have a telephone cable connected the jack labelled "LINE" on your brother machine.
Go through the Menu on the LCD, Initial setup, dial tone, choose the correct dial tone PULSE or TONE.
Exit from the menu.
Pick up the handset on the fax machine, and dial your nuber to make a phone call. (To send a fax, dial the number without lifting the handset.)
Hope this will work for you. If it solved your problem, give a please rating

Receiving fax

You need to press the "mode" button until the mode on the right side of the display says "FAX ONLY" ( if the line is just for faxes) or "FAX/TEL" ( for fax and voice calls) in the fax/tel mode it will ring with a "double ring" if it is a voice call.

Fax machine will not send any faxes

Does it receive? Are you absolutely sure that the line is OK? If there is ANY interference/ static it will affect the machine. Are you sure phone cord is plugged into the right jack on the fax machine? It should be in the "line" port. Do you have a nice clear dial tone if you pick up the handset? try another phone jack if possible for a test.

INTELLIFAX 2820 NO FAXES COMING THROUGH

Oops, I disconnected from the chat with you after I said I would stay connected. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask them here. Just for our knowledge base, in case anyone else has this problem - it turned out to be a short in the phone line. When picking up the handset connected to the fax machine, there was no dial tone. When connecting the fax machine to another phone line, the dial tone returned. After swapping out the phone cord between the wall and the fax machine to be sure that wasn't the problem, Jriedel is now talking to the phone company about it.
