On my 99 volkswagen beetle, when I crank the car regardless of whether the air conditioning is on or off it makes a noise as if it is some sort of growling/sqweaking noise. We believe it is the air conditioning compressor. Could it be anything else before I put that kind of money intot he compressor?

If the engine is running when turning steering then it sounds like a loose alternator drive belt, if the engine is switched off and the noise is coming from inside the car at the steering wheel area it will be the steering wheel coil spring swicth gear
Have you had your brake light sensor replace. They have a recall on it. Change out your drive belt and it should make the noise go away. As long as it's cooling(a/c) i would not change compressor.
This seems to be a classic case of "disentegrating exhaust system syndrome." There is either a hole(s) somewhere in your exhaust system or there is a leak somewhere. Probably the easiest way to tell where the noise is coming from is to start your car and just listen around in the engine bay, under the car, and at the muffler. Also do a visual inspection of the exhaust system to see if you can see any holes in the piping. I have also seen hairline cracks in the exhaust header itself that can cause the loud ticking noise that can be a little tricky to track down.
