Question about Garmin GPS 48 GPS Receiver

1 Answer

Garmin 45 no position.

I have just bought a Garmin 45 from USA as backup for my original Garmin 45 which works ok. Now in the UK it will not aquire satelites and the clock is showing the wrong time and year.

I have tried putting in my position and leaving it to search the sky overnight but still it has no position. ocasionally it appears to locate a satelite and then looses it again. Is it possible to download the almanac from my good unit via my laptop and upload it to the non-functioning unit?

regards

I don't understand what you mean. My old unit is working but the new unit is not working in the same place.

What do you think I can do to alter the time on the old unit?

What can I do to make the old unit find the satelites and give me a position?

I still have the problem. Can I re-load the almanack into a Garmin 45?

Hi tech8, Yes I used autolocate and left the unit running all night with a good view of the sky. In the morning, no position and no satellietes aquired. Also the date and time shown on the USA purchased unit is very wrong.

I only thought that it might be the almanac that has been lost due to flat batteries over a long period. Can this happen?

I cannot access the almanac by pluging in my laptop, any ideas on how I might do this?

I am begining to think that this might be a probblem that I will have to ask Garmin to fix for me.

    Hi Tech8,

The Garmin 45 doesn't have a country mode. It is a marine gps and should be able to find its location anywhere in the world. It has no maps programmed into it, you have to plot your position on a paper chart. Pretty archaic huh?

The roblem seems to be that the unit has lost its memory from being in storage without batteries for a long time, maybe some years. The unit does not even know what time, date r year it is in so I believe it has lost its almanac.

If I travel more than 500 miles with my working unit, anywhere in the world, I just switch it to auto locate and within five minutes it knows where it is.

I think it will have to go back to Garmin.

The old gps unit is set up for the uk
and you want to transfer the almanac
from the old gps to the new gps by
copying the almanac from old gps to
pc then copying from laptop to new gps
    is that correct

Do you use the computer to download
update for gps and then upload to
    gps unit

If that is correct it is conceivable
that it would work Don't beat me up
if it doesn't work I doubt there would
be any type of encryption problems
or anything but I have never been
in your particular situation if you
    aren't concerned over warranty or
what not I would give it a try

    What did you do

  • Eugene Merritt Dec 03, 2007

If you travel more than 500 miles
with the unit deactivated then you will
have to reinitiate to relocate your bearings

Yes but it has to locate the country you are
in.if the uk it has to have a map of uk or it
it has to locate itself after the uk come up
on the screen it has to recognize it in uk
not usa.thats why you have to use country
    mode

I need to put a scotland map on my garmin.what do I do ?

The map of Scotland comes with the "UK and Ireland", "Western Europe" or "Europe" maps so if you buy any of the three you'll have the map of Scotland. You can buy one of the maps by going to www.garmin.com and logging into myGarmin. Click on the myMaps tab at the top of the screen and then on "Purchase more maps" Follow the prompts.

Before buying the map, if you have a satnav bought in the USA you need to check if it will work in Europe. Most of the USA garmin nuvis will not work in Europe with the exception of those that come with both European and American maps.

Garmin nuvi 1300 Query

Usually they come preloaded with some maps and you purchase additional ones. Check the manual that came with it or the box and that should tell you which ones it has. Generally speaking a basic unit bought in the UK will come with UK & Ireland preloaded, more expensive unit may have UK, Ireland & Europe and the most expensive may have all three plus USA. It's unlikely you will have 'lost' your USA map. The unit should have a 'drop down' menu which allows you to choose which map to load. Hope this helps!

I have a garmin nuve 1300.. and it keeps on saying aquiring satellites i have tried all aspects of trobleshooting... can u suggest anything different

A Garmin Nuvi 1300 that won't start, or is acting erratically is symptomatic of having corrupt firmware.

To correct this, I recommend backing up your favorites, clearing all user data, and if it still is stuck, then updating your Nuvi firmware.

Follow these three steps to take to get your Garmin Nuvi 1300 running like new:

  1. Back up your Favorites.
  2. Perform a Hard Reset.
  3. Download and then run Garmin WebUpdater to replace its firmware / system software.

I hope that helps.

I bought a garmin nuvi 680 in a yard sale, functional is ok,but need pin can you help

Nope, the PIN is set by the original user and can't be broken. Even Garmin won't reset it without an original receipt from a Garmin dealer. If you weren't given the PIN when you bought it second hand, it was probably stolen.

Can I save a copy of my map from my Garmin Nuvi 660 to my computer?

Yes you can. The file name is "gmapprom.img" and is located in the "Garmin" directory. It will take about 45 minutes to an hour to copy it to your PC and the same amout of time to go back to your Nuvi should you accidently erase it on your Nuvi. The file is nearly 1 GB in size.

It is always a good idea to backup all of your files from your Nuvi.

I have a Nuvi 200w that I received last December as a gift. This unit takes forever to aquire a satellite. The "DIFFICULY AQUIRING SATELLITES" message comes on 90% of the times I try to use it....

While under warranty.... yes.... Make sure it's been registered on their site before calling them and requesting an RMA number.

Good luck!

I don't think you can change the base map, you can however add maps, maybe the UK will fit in what's left. You will need the Europe DVD to do that with an unlock key.

"Upload ...Not Present" message. Nothing else on the screen. I replaced the internal battery last spring used it all summer. Have just checked internal and external batteries and all are fresh 3v internal and new AA four batteries. Upon startup the screen says "Upload" "Not Present" and there is no menu. I have tried hitting Page and Menu, etc. nothing happens. I tried leaving it out and on for 3 hours to see if it would find itself and satellites. I tried connecting to the computer and uploading the internal program the port was not found. Tried this a number of times and a number of ways. I have tried leaving it on to search for 3 hours and have tried to connect to my computer to reinstall the software but that does not work. The internal battery was replaced with a new one last year. I have fresh batteries in the unit. What is the problem? How do I fix it? Thank you. I love this unit and would like to keep it going. I have fixed two others for friends who needed the internal battery fixed. They use it as a backup. I have tried the Auto Locate procedure about 3 times. I have also tried clearing by holding the PAGE + Power. Then tried autolocate. Message "Upload... Not Present" still remains. Also have tried clearing by holding the MARK + Power. Then tried autolocate. Message "Upload... Not Present" still remains. Now I am wondering if this message has to do with an interrupted connection with EasyGPS from last winter. I was uploading waypoints, and thought it had completed and may have turned off and disconnected the plug before an operation was completed in saving waypoints off the Garmin 48. I do not know this for a fact, but that was the last operation I recall doing last fall, before starting the GPS up again on the boat this spring. I have also tried to connect the unit to Easy GPS via the serial port, thinking perhaps it would complete whatever it is trying to do. I have tried uploading routes and downloading routes via EasyGPS send and recieve and it does not seem to work. I wonder now if the interface setting has been reset, by my pressing PAGE+power and Mark + Power earlier. I would not mind that if the menus came up properly, but that is not happening. Is there some other way to kick it out of this mode? I turn it on and there is the message "Upload...Not present" and none of the menu buttons work to get it into the normal startup screen mode..... I've tried Quit, Page, Enter, Goto, Mark, Power (off and on), and none of the get the computer out of this mode and back into the normal menus for startup. I've removed the antennae and checked all the contacts and that seems fine, and reinstalled. Is there some small reboot button inside that I can jumper? I have tried taking the internal battery out and letting it sit for three days and it still does the same thing. Any suggestions would be appreciated
