Your Scanner buld is out. Unfortunately for everyone. The company has jipped everyone who has ever bought one of their scanners. Just like Cadillac parts in the 60's, and 70's they produced the scanner, but produced no replaceble parts. Thus, leaving you to buy another cheap-*** scanner. Which in the end will cost you alot. As you may have seen, models are increasing in price. Beyond thais, THEY ARE MADE IN CHINA!!!!!! Take note. cheap stuff from China, instead of having a national repair network, spells All of us being took for a ride!!!!
If running XP SP2, then try clicking Start > right click My Computer > properties > Hardware tab > Device Manager button > expand Imaging devices > right click on your Microtek ScanMaker > uninstall > Re boot > and let XP pick up the device and let the found hardware wizard configure it.
I have seen plenty of hardware that when following the devices manufacturer's instructions for install, such problems as you're having occur and XP SP2 usually will cure it, though you may still need the device manufacturer's CD (for the driver) in your optical drive.
This link: http://support.microtek.com/downloads/bymodelname.phtml?viewtype=2&srch_in=ScanMaker+5950&frmsearch.x=10&frmsearch.y=11&frmsearch=Search&frm_rqst=2&axn=1 will allow you to select between the 5950 and 5950 Pro then on the next page you will be able to download the latest XP driver for your Scanmaker among drivers for other Operating Systems also.
Are you ussing it witha Mac?
I could not make this scanner work on System 10.4.x. Had to download software from Microtek and use it with system 10.3.x but it works better with Classic System 9.2
The light stops blinking when used with the older systems and the scanner arm moves. My problem is that the light does not come on.
JKL Components was able to create a new bulb for me for Microtek 9800 XL with Transparency Adapter. If you have a different model might need to send the bulb so they can see if it needs to be modified. Worked perfectly. Call Larry: 818-896-0019 ext 124. Very nice, and very helpful
