Question about Texas Instruments TI-84 Plus Calculator

2 Answers

TI-84 will not trun on.

My son was running a program, and shut off hisTI-84. (I do not know what the program did, but I suspect that it was not school related and might have been the cause of the problem in the first place.) Now it will not turn back on. We pulled all of the batteries, even the one that looks like a watch battery hoping that a complete loss of power would reset the calculator. It still did not turn on. We tried new batteries but that did not help. I have not tried to adjust the "brightness" after turning it on, but I do not think that is the problem.

Try the following

1) Remove one of the AAA batteries, hold down on the DEL key while reinserting the AAA battery. The handheld might display Waiting…Please install calculator software now. Ignore this message. Remove and reinstall one of the AAA batteries again This time, do not hold down the DEL key.
2) Remove one of the AAA batteries, press and hold the [on] key for 10 seconds, release, replace the battery, then turn the unit on. Adjust the contrast.
3) Remove the AAA batteries for three hours. After the three-hour period, reinsert the batteries and turn the handheld on. Adjust the contrast if necessary.

If needed, reinstall OS by downloading the OS from the TI site and ....
On your computer, choose Start, Programs, TI Tools, TI Connect, TI OS Downloader.

(I am not the one who came up with this answer, but found it on an other site. If this doesn't work, please let me know)

This has worked for me in the past, but this time it did nothing. It is totally frozen and I can only turn it off by taking out the batteries and leaving them out. :( Does anyone have any other ideas? Thanks!

Make sure all of the batteries are in the right direction when you put them back in. No, I am not insulting your intelligence: this has happened to many people (including me)

Does a TI 89 have an advantage over a TI 84 in a 10th grade algebra class? My sons teacher won't let him use an 89. He says it does too much of the work for him. Is this right?

the 89 is in my opinion not need/ approriate for a 10th grade algebra class, or worth the extra money.

for example the 84 wont output variables it must output a number

so your son may be doing factoring, if he inserts (x^2+2x+1) the 89 will allow him to enter it and factor it as (x+1)(x+1) or (x+1)^2 the 84 will not.

the 84 will do pleanty as far as graphing, finding zeros, plotting, calculations, and should get him any answer that he seeks so long that he knows how to use the 84. It just wont give him the intermediate steps the the 89 is able to give.

hope this helps

School disabled all my apps - now what?

Use the link cable and link your calculator to a calculator where the apps haven't been disabled. From the other calculator, send a program or an app and that should enable the apps on your calculator

Can you Factor on a TI-84? IF not, does the TI-89?

Well, to answer part of your question, yes... the TI-89 does factor like this. it is inputted like this:

factor(6*x^2+11*x+4,x)

Check the catalog in the TI-84 (which is 2nd-zero) and look under F for factor()

Ti85

kinda. The TI-85 programs differently, lacks a table feature, is not upgradable, has redefinable keys, has a larger screen, is smaller, energy efficient, TI-86 semi-compatible, and is older.
The TI-84+ has archive memory, flash-upgradable, FSTN (clearer) screen, 16*8 screen, USB On-The-Go compliant, almost a centimeter longer, assembly language support, and a tad bit faster.

TI-82: $89
TI-83 Plus: $79-99
Free TI-85: $0
TI-84 plus: $119.99
TI-84+SE: $129-139
TI-89 Titanium: $149
