Unable to detect my Netgear Gigabit smart switch GS748T via Smartwizard discovery. Earlier have tried reset the switch to factory default but to no avail. Pls help.

First, make sure your switch and PC are in the same broadcast domain/subnet, and that there is a DHCP server in operation.

Second, make sure you are following the "factory reset" procedure correctly (

Third, check your version of Smartwizard Discovery, and download a newer version if one is available. I think the latest version is 2.05.05 (download from

All lights on all connected ports on a netgear gs105 switch rapidly flashing constantly; data traffic seems slow or drops. Occurs regardless of how many devices connected or which ones.

1. A switch is a dumb device it just transfers data via the ports
2. if you are having slow or dropped data this possibly is due to bandwidth issue.
3. contact your internet service provider to check your speed and you line condition.
4. You didn't say if you were using a router, but if so this could what is call "collision"
5. some switch do this due to speed of the data throughput\.

My network switch LEDs all blinking even without LAN connected

The LEDS blinking normally would indicate reset internally or when the unit has just been powered on. Continous LEDs lighting up or flashing with or without a connection is an indication of extensive hardware failure. This could have been brought about by a near lightning strike, a power surge or simply component failure. Unfortunately the repairs is not economically reasonable and therefore a replacement might be better off. Sorry.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

DHCP problem and router connection

  • access router's configuration page and set the settings IP addressing to DHCP or auto assigning the IP addresses and the DNS
  • set the router mac address to the middle option set to computer mac address
  • and make sure all the computers connected to the router and the switch is set to automatically detect the IP address and the DNS is all set to auto detect...
  • how to access XP...goto to control panel and select network connections (for vista network and sharing center, manage network connections) and right click on the LAN, select properties select tcp/ip and click properties. and selct automatically assigns IP address and DNS.

Open Port 81 on Netgear Switch

Actually you need to open the port on the cable modem / router. Switches just pass the packets along.

Netgear JGS524 appears to be dead...

This is an un-mamaged switch, so it is very difficult to get any kind of diagnostic information out of it. Some times, this may mean that the switch is on and active, but at those times, there is some times a mode button to switch through the different types of indicators on the switch. This switch doesn't even have that. There is almost no documentation on this device. The only thing I could find was this install guide, and it doesn't mention anything about the lights indicating some type of diagnostic code. If you connect two machines to the switch, and both these machines have Static IP addresses (do not use DHCP), can they ping each other? If the can, then I say the switch is fine and its just a cosmetic problem. If they cannot, then I am afraid you will have to return this one as well.
