I had to re install windows xp pro after my sony vaio crashed several times. The first attempts went ok. I had to do this another occation and my usb web cam would not work I have downloaded the drivers from sony (I have a Vaio vgn fe790 notebook) as well as other places and i still cant get it to work. When I try to get the installation to look at the file location to install it seems to look for a ini or exe file i'm not sure which it says but the driver/ installation download is the wrong type. Please help. Thank you in advance for your time.
Try downloading the drivers from this location:
http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=VGNFE790
RUN each exe you download from this site, and follow the installation steps from them. they will install the hardware automatically, without you needing to go into device manager.
if this doesn't work, try going to Device Manager, and reinstalling it using the "automatic" option. If it still keeps asking you for a filepath, point it towards C:windowssystem32, and then C:windowssystem32drivers if unsuccessful. if the EXE you ran installed the driver files, everything that is required should be in those folders.
If both of the options above don't work... then take a look at what the driver is listed as. if it's just listed as "unknown device" (without a product/model name), chances are Windows found it doesn't know what it is, due to a glitch- or faulty hardware. my suggestion would be to uninstall it from Device Manager, restart your computer, and see if it picks it up. If it does, work from there to follow the above steps.
hope this helps!
cheers,
