The side labeled "WAN" should connect to your internet connection, whether it's cable, DSL, or any other broadband connection. The "LAN" side should connect to your PC.
Most consumer-grade routers (Linksys, Belkin, D-Link, etc) work out of the box, so it should be plug and play.

Do an extra cable cord have to be purchased to connect to laptop to hook up wireless internet? From modem

No, there is no extra cable cord needed to hook up a laptop to a wireless router. Please tell me what you have tried to do and I will help you get connected. Did you set up the router? Do you know if there is a password needed to connect to the wireless network?

Let me know where you are at and I will help you get connected.

There's no place on modem to hook router

Look for Ethernet jacks. You want to hook both your computer and your daughter's laptop to the router to out ports i.e. usually on the front side. The back side of router would hook using probably another Ethernet jack to your modem.

You need to configure your router.
For that Connect your router to computer with ethernet cable then you can access it with following default link.
http://192.168.15.1
or
http://192.168.2.1
If you are not able to access it with above ip then check your computers ip address gateway ip is your router ip try with it.
Then it ask for user name and password.
Type user as "admin" and password as "admin" or "password" or blank.
Then you can see configuration page of router.
If you are not able to access it then you need to RESET it for that press RESET button for 10 seconds it is in back side of router
Then try with above default link..
Let me know if you need further assistance.

I have a two wire router trying to hook up to run my laptop

You need to run from the DSL modem into the ethernet port at the very top of the 1701hg. Use your other 4 ports below to send one the computer and one to your vonage. You will no longer need to "jump" though your vontage unit. Other than connecting the power cables, you are all hooked up.

I have a toshiba router and I am trying to hook up my d-link wireless broadband router with no success.

I don't think you can do this weressly and I don't think this is what you actually want.
hooking up a router to another router its probably something you may not need/want to do.
why do you need a router hooked up to another router?
the router allows you to get onto/comunicate with another network... (ex... you computers at home (local network) onto the internet (the other network)... do you have 2 local networks that you want to keep separate?, you can do that.. but it requires to know some basics concepts on subnetting. please explain in detail what you're trying to do
