You need to get a gauge hooked up to see what the actual pressure is. (a garage can do this if you can't get ahold of one.) This will tell you exactly what the oil pump is, or isn't doing. The gauge threads in where the sending unit goes.

First of all you have to determine if you really have low oil pressure with a real gauge. If the oil pressure is zero you may have a bad oil pump, but if the pressure is low your engine may be just worn out and the oil cannot build up pressure because the clearances are too loose.
Doesn't sound good, but there's something you can try.
Assuming you changed the filter and then discovered low oil pressure, it's entirely possible the oil pressure relief valve is gummed up and not fully seated, or the spring may be broken or weak.
I don't have a manual/diagram to show you the location, but it's usually on the oil pump under a removable plug. Inside is a spring pressing against a plunger that holds the oil pressure back. Any excess pressure, such as when the engine is cold, will force it open.
Any problem here can reduce oil pressure to zero. You may be able to repair it, though I guess the engine has already been damaged somewhat.
How many miles are on the engine? Have you tried to replace the oil pressure switch? is the engine making any type of noise due to low pressure reading?
did your oil light come on as well?? Sounds like your oil pump is going bad just from what you told me.....Check your oil and make sure you have it full...
Dont run your engine with low oil pressure as it could seize especially if your oil pump isnt working.
It is possible the the oil pressure sensor could be bad.The next thing I would do if the light stays on is to hook an actual pressure guage in place of the oil sensor to get an actual pressure reading from the pump.If the pressure is low and doesn't rise when given gas then it could be a bad oil pump. But I would get the sensor tested by a local service station and then go from there. All electrical components can be tested in one form or another.
It sounds like oil pressure switch is bad. You said you changed? To clarify, your oil pressure switch is also a safety item that shuts down ignition when oil pressure drops. Try an oil pressure gauge (hand held) to relieve your nerves about engine seizure. Make sure you're not getting to much fuel in engine also, that will dilute oil to a thin viscosity and show low oil press.
Have a mechanical gauge hooked up to see that the oil pressure is good or not. If you have no or low at an idle, it can be due to bad oil pump, or worn out bearings.
Your oil becomes too fluid as the engine gets warmer. When the engine rotates slower at stops, the oil pump won't make pressure. At speeds, more oil is pumped and the pressure rises. Have you recently changed your oil? Or maybe is too old. The real problem would be if you read zero at normal cruising revolutions.
CHECK THE OIL PUMP SUMP TUBE O-RING. THEY COLLAPSE CAUSING THE OIL PUMP TO PULL AIR INSTEAD OF OIL. TO VERIFY OVER FILL ENGINE OIL AND CHECK ENGINE OIL PRESSURE. THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM ON ALL NEWER GM V-8 ENGINES : 4.8 5.3 5.7 6.0
