I have the same problem. When I first plug in the power cable the front power light is off but the LED on the MB is on. As soon as I press the power switch the power light starts flashing orange, there is a brief whirring sound, like something was trying to start up, but nothing happens. I have reseated the heat sink and memory, and checked the front panel connectors. When I got this system it had all the internal cables disconnected, but I think they are all back correctly. Anything else I could try ? Too bad, as it looks like an okay system. Thanks !

I've tried to troubleshoot this myself and found that if I hold the power button in, it will stay running. No hard drive activity or fans, but it stays on. when I release power button, the green lights next to the mouse & keyboard ports light up than the machine will go dead. The power light then just blinks amber. Any ideas would be helpful.Oh, I tried most of the simple stuff already like clean cable points, reseat mem. sticks etc. Thanks

A blinking Yellow power light means a dead power supply. Whats with all the overly complicated answers. Every Dell I've ever worked on that had that problem was the power supply and I've fixed hundreds of them.....

This is a power OR power supply problem.

1. Unplug computer from wall wait 30 sec and replug
(direct to wall if you formerly used a UPS)
     see if it works
This is common condition after a thunderstorm

2. If this dowes not fix it . . .
    Unplug power
    open case
check & reseat all power connectors
    Close case
    plug in
    see if it works

3. If it still does not work you are past the
"amature hour" attempts to fix it.
These next steps are assuming the power supply is OK
and you are looking for some component that has gone bad.

  a. Unplug all unnecessary external USB devices
like printer / web cam / camera docking station etc.
(keyboard and mouse are probably essential)
then plug computer back in and see if it will boot

  b. Open case and unplug any unnecessary drives
      floppy / CD / DVD
then plug computer back in and see if it will boot

  c. Unplug ALL drives including the boot drive(s)
test and see if computer will boot to the POST screen
(POST = Power On Self Test)
if you still have the flashing orange light it is likely
that it is your power supply that has failed.

Most repair shops would immediately try a new power supply
because they have them in stock.  The steps above cost no
money, and may save you a trip to the shop.

If you have a spare power supply laying around
($40 or so) you can try replacing the power supply.

Hi,
This is may be because of improper setting of front pannel connections in the motherboard. or due to improper grounding

I was getting no start up, not even cmos screen. Then lost picture, no screen, used on board and external video. I then took out the cmos batter out, the motherboard jumper, and unpluged all power connections, took memory out. Waited, put everything back. I got it to work!! maybe this will be helpful:)

I have a dell Optiplex SX280, ultra small form factor. It booted up, then made a noise and went dead. From then on it would power up but would not boot. The fans were running, the hard drive was spinning, but the monitor was completely blank. The power light in front was flashing orange and the motherboard light was orange (which may be normal). The A,B,C,D in back above the power cord were not light up at all. I replaced the RAM and didn't work. I replaced the BIOS battery and it didn't work. I tried a 2nd power supply and it didn't work (I bought 2 power supply units when I purchased computer). I tried a different monitor and didn't work. I inspected all the USB ports and everything seemed fine. Finally I noticed 3 of the capacitors on the mother board were bulging on top and 2 of them had leakage (see this website for example pictures (http://www.badcaps.net). I was convinced this was it. Luckily I found a local computer repair shop that replaced the capacitors same day for $60.00 and voila - it booted right up!! So my recommendation is inspect all the capacitors on the motherboard especially if you have this model Dell since apparently it is a known issue.

Check the heat sink connection to the CPU. These units often need to have this cleaned and new compound applied as the original heat sink compound dries out.

SOURCE: Dell Desktop

unplug the power supply hold the power supply button down with the cord out for up to 60 seconds, then plug it back it, worked for me.

mine was caused by a sensor program trying to access the sensors in the PC which caused a boot failure for some reason.
(computer shutting down to protect itself?)

Is it booting to normal mode?

If it is booting to normal mode, click start - run and type msconfig.
Click on Boot.ini tab and Check Safeboot. Click Apply and Close or OK. It will restart the computer to safe mode. Remember to uncheck Safeboot to make the computer to boot in normal mode again.

SOURCE: My Dell Precision 380's power light is orange

Check all of the electrical connections to all devices in the machine, especially the motherboard. Many times this is a result of a poor connection being jarred loose during a move.

Boot problem with Dell Optiplex GX150

To reinstall Xp from the CD you need to press F2 and go into the BIOS then select the boot order configuration and make the CD the first boot device and the hard disk the second boot device.
After installing XP, if you wish you can go back into the BIOS and change the boot order to boot from the hard disk first.
