I cannot find my instruction book, but my laptop is suddenly asking for a password and i cannot remember what i set it up as.

I agree with Jon Snell. This computer is NOT NEW. Someone has set a user name and password. If it is a Microsoft Windows 7 machine there are instructions on the net in U-Tube on how to break and eliminate or reset the password. If you bought what you were told is a new computer then take it back.

This password can be removed from BIOS, you should try to open BIOS (usually by pressing F2 during startup) and check if HD password is set.

Please see below for instructions on reset the BIOS password on your old Tecra.

• Download KeyDisk from http://www.cgsecurity.org/keydisk.exe
• Format a 1.44MB floppy disk and leave in your floppy drive
• RunKeyDisk, this will create a special floppy disk to reset your laptop password.
• Insert this disk into your Tecra laptop and reboot, the laptop should find the disk, boot from it and ask you for a password, press ENTER at this prompt and it will ask you for a new password.

new computers recommend an administrator password so you can set it up. The password would be one that you want to put in. So just use one that you will remember and it will then ask you to confirm the password that you entered. Remember to write your chosen password down somewhere in case you forget it at a later date. For example if oyu ever have to restore your computer to factory default settings it will ask you for the password that you created here. So enter anything as long as you remember what it is. Lots of people just put the word admin for their password because it is easy to remember. But it is up to you.

There are two places when you may be asked for a password - can you please clarify which one it is.

1. The BIOS password which will ask you for a password BEFORE you see the Windows loading screen
2. The Windows password, which will ask you for the password after the computer has started, but before you can see your desktop.

There is a reasonably easy solution for both of these.
