My hp 4520 probook is not picking up the cd/dvd drive, no type of cd is visible in "Computer" folder or accessible. It does not automatically pick up the cd/dvd and ask usual functions like "open with"...

no OS stated, no CD stated, but asks...
there are vast types of CD disks, not one stated by you
what is ? whats on it , what does the label say is it home made CD
non of that can we know, and is KEY to the best answer.
for autorun to work 4 things must be good.
1: the CD drive shows up in device manager, and be OK.
2: the CD must be good. what is it, not stated by you. yet.
3: the autorun feature turn on via the My computer explorer.
4: the CD must have an autorun file, many dont.

so lets forget AUTORUN, (must walk first then run, LOL)
first as always it the DRIVE must be pulled in and not bad.
2nd the Device manager must show it as must next it shows, up
in Diskmanagment and last must show up in My Computer.
or in W10 that is now called. THIS PC.
Microshaft changed this name for local explorer 4 times. for kinks.
and sux that, having to tell that.

sure seen this 1000s of times.
and all ways from sunday , you name it ive fix it,
even bad media or media from China it this pure trash.

lets say the Device manager, shows the drive.
what to do next? well that is easy
go to walfart and buy a music disk
this is called a CD-DA disk.
this disk works on all optical drives made.
if you see it in MY computer and click it , it will play.
music. as designed to do .

one other thing to do us load the Probook drivers from HP
on the PC, matching what drive you have,
mine is a DVD drive, upgraded. and can burn DVD-R.
if you have windows install disk put that in,
now.
you can see files now for the first time if the CD is a DVD
and the drive is a DVD drive, you see fails.
if the MS orHP disk is DVD and the LT only has CD drive
its hopeless.
if you have modern drive you can read most files.
even MP3., WAV music
and watch movies on DVD.
if you upgrade to BRD, blue ray drive you can run BR movies.

Older cd/dvd drives many not be able to see or run
any burned drives, the first ones could not do that.
like DVD-r or DVD+r home burned disks.

again see if a real store bought music disk works (CD-DA)
if that works good move up to more complex disks and test.
if not the DVD drive is dead, or the drivers do not match your drive.
to match any drive.
remove it and read the number on it.
it has a tag.

so you said all type but do tell if it is a store bought CD first.
for music, not a burned disk by you or others.
a disc from a store, real, music and not scratched up.

got this one? there are many types offered and used,

When I put multimedia data in drive d such as picture, video or mp3 my notebook PC can't read it probably it doesn't work and become busy in case when I put that data in drive C:/desktop so after that...

all this bad started just today? your you just found an old pC> and...........
start by telling 2 things
what media, name it, a CD , DVD or CD-DA music disk?
or what is what is D: driver
i can be 10f things, from dvd /cd drivers to hdd, SSD or lost more.

my guess is you moved a MP3 fail to the and it plays
sure, and proves the media player works (we use VLC)
is this windOWS XP, we cant guess what OS you run ever.
it must be stated, clearly. XP is pain with DVD/CD drives.

lets play a game, you said
XP
and you sad , all disks in my CD drive fail, all cd discs of any kind
or its a DVD drive (gee I can see it or read the tray front with those words there) and its a DVD, and all DVD disks of all kinds fail
that is cause by:
1: ;XP infected. as all are now. and pnp servers at MS are now dead.
2: XP does not have SP3 installed, AS IT MUST,
3: XP has the registry corruption INFAMOUS now for 16 long years, running google that fix.
4: the drive is bad. CD or DVD
5: your cd disk is bad but others work. so .... captain obvious this.

When cd isinserted it does not start to play but show E-1 on screen

E1 = Disk is dirty, or is upside down. A disk has data other than CD-DA, MP3, or WMA has been loaded.

I'd try some other CD's, and if that doesn't work, I'd try one of those cheap CD lens cleaning kits. Try re-setting the whole deck (disconnected power).

If you receive an error reading or the cd ejects automatically briefly after being inserted, the headunit needs to be repaired or replaced.

Good luck.

Yes, that's what it looks like. Make sure you put this in the right section next time, though.

Not reading DVD and CD's :-(

When you get no disk error, that is usually because of a problem with the optical laser lens that is dirty, faulty or opaque, and will start operating on certain disks better than others.

In that case you will hear disk spinning, whirring and clicking, but the TOC (table of content track at start of CD/DVD will not be read, therefore the error.

Whe this problem is starting you may be able to read only CD, DVD or Blue ray, or for example only DVD-R and not +R , or only to read and not to write and so on. After more prolonged usage , often the unit goes losing the rest of functions, and ends up not reading anything at all.

If instead there is no noise, and disk does not spin at all , then there is a faulty motor, or the motor micro-switch is bad. This situation is far less common than the lens problem.

Try first using a CD/DVD or Blue ray lens cleaner disk to clean the lens. If that does not work you will need to disassemble the drive , and clean lens directly with q tips and isopropyl alcohol, or to replace the CD/DVD lens, or the whole drive unit.
