When i try to scan using either the scan button on the printer itself (hp4215) or try to scan using the Hp image zone software an error comes up that says "an unexpected internal error has occurred. click ok to close the program, and then try one of the following: Restart the program. Restart the PC and then try again. Reinstall the Photo and Imaging Software and try again"
I tried the first two but don't know how to reinstall the software. Please let me know how to reinstall the software or let me know how to fix the problem another way

programs we put to macbooks are supposed to be easy to use. you have to first check the printer itself when you turn it on, uncover the scan bed and see if its moving or flashing light the moment you power it on. or when you press the scan button. if that scan thing inside the scan bed is not responding at all when you press the scan button, it means that the scan mechanism (bulb) is broken or needs replacing or the printer itself needs replacing. if that hp dj is new and if you're in the usa you can have it replaced by hp, just call 800-HP invent for tech support.
The yellow flashing light means there is a problem with the feature you're trying to use. If you're trying to scan, it could be that there is not a destination program set up to scan to. You can try using the software to scan instead of the scanner itself to make sure it's not a hardware problem. If you installed the HP software included with the all in one, there should be a troubleshooter you can use to help diagnose the problem as well.
When you lift lid to scanner pad, does bulb light up? It should also move slightly as if to prepare for a scan. If these things do not occur, something is definitely wrong with the scanner itself and will require a technician to service.
If bulb does light and carriage moves, then you should try using the buttons on printer control panel and try to use software on computer to try a scan.
If the control panel button works, then it's a software issue. You can try different software like HP Directory or any photo software with input from scanner feature.
If software works, but control panel doesn't, you'll need a technician to fix the panel.
If neither work, we are back to a problem with the physical scanner. That requires a technician to look at it.
Frankly Vista is a dog, and I'm not surprised at your difficulty. Have you tried installing the printer from Vista itself, rather than using the Printer CD? This can work if the printer CD is for XP (as many are).
The reason you're getting this is because you need to have compatible software installed on your computer.
The disk that your printer came with will come with the relevant software but you might want to check the HP website for something more up to date as they have released fixes over time.
Once you have that installed I would use the proper software to request the scan from the printer rather than trying to use the scan button on the printer itself. To be honest I have no idea why HP put that button on there as it makes things more complicated than they need to be.
Oh, also worth noting that any software that can work with TWAIN compliant scanners should be able to see and use your L7580 without anything new so it may be worth checking anything already installed on your computer to see if it already does what you want.
Hope that helps.
I reinstalled the printer software and reconnected the wireless connection and it now works well. I read somewhere that registry cleaner software may remove HP files that are required so this time after the registry cleaner scan, I unchecked any HP entry or printer entry and the scanner is still working, however, only from the pc to the printer, I still cannot scan using the buttons on the printer.
If you have windows vista and it comes up with the "no scan options" don't press the button on the printer, go to "start" then "accessories" then "paint". This will open up the windows paint program. Go to "File" then click on "From scanner or printer". It will then scan the document, no more problems! Happy scanning
