The metal rode inside my inspiron 2200 has come loose and now wont recognize its plugged in unless you really jiggle the cord and even then wont stay connected. To make matters worse my battery is completely dead too and wont recharge so this is the only way to work my computer. I will never buy another dell again...but in the mean time does anyone know how to fix it?
This is a common issue with laptops as the cords get pulled and hit all the time. If nothing got shorted on the board and the traces on the board didnt get damaged then the power jack can be replaced. If you know how to take things apart and solder then you should be able to replace the jack. Check ebay for a replacement jack.
Usually this means replacing the motherboard, but you could also have a bad power supply/charger. How old is the computer and is it still under warranty?

My Dell Inspiron works perfectly fine on the dock. When I use it away from the dock, though, the power "comes and goes" and the screen flashes dim then bright repeatedly. Eventually I see that my battery is not charging. I have replaced the external power cord and that doesn't seem to help.
