Fuse blows repeatedly

Guardian Ultra Source 15KW, about 20 months old, but only about 5 hours total run time (start it occaisionally to charge battery). With a new fuse installed, unit will start and run at full speed. If I select idle control, unit dies -- fuse is blown. If start, run and shutdown, next attempt to start fails (no response when pushing start button) - fuse is blown again. Any ideas?

- protek480: Thanks for the post. Yes, it runs fine at full throttle, but when I shut it down with the OFF switch, it blows the fuse. It must use the auto speed control in the shutdown sequence(?). Guess I could shut off fuel with the fuel valve(?).

- protek480: It appears you were correct. With the positive line from the starter solenoid disconnected from the battery and the generator running, that red line reads zero Volts through the meter to ground. I left the line disconnected and used the fuel shutoff to starve the engine to shutdown, but the fuse still blew. Don't understandd why the fuse would blow with that line disconnected. Diode shorted to ground? Running out of fuses. :-)

- protek480: Got the manual, thanks. Looks like Test 8 (diode and resistor check) needs to be performed. Not sure if my meter has a diode test setting (I'm not there now). I am investigating optoins for repair at a shop (still under warranty). Thanks for your help.

The auto speed control is failed. Keep it manual and see how it does...It will run at full throttle even when no load is running. Then fix the throttle control when able.

- I will need to look at the schematic for your model to see what the fuse circuit is. Give me a bit more time and I will tell you what it is. Make sure I have the make and model.

- Found your manual if yo need it go here
http://www.poweredgenerators.com/guardian/manuals/0F7713.pdf

The 10 amp fuse thaat is blowing is feeding the battery charging circuit. Remove positive (+) lead from battery with gen running and
check voltage at positive wire coming from generator . If no voltage there, that will indicate a bad diode from charge
circuit. If voltage present (13.5 volts DC), then we'll move on to other circuits.

- Do not refuse it at this time. You just won't have a charging circuit for now.
the fix may be a bit tricky for you...Did I send you the manual link? Do you have the manual? The schematic show the circuit that is causing this. The gen has a 'winding' for the charger to the battery. It makes AC and then rectifies it to 13.5 volts DC. The most likely problem are the diodes (2) that rectify the voltage. They are small and inexpensive. Do you want to try and change them yourself (with my help) ?

Leave the wire I told you to check unhooked for now and tape it off.
