Question about Sony Handycam DCR-SR40 Camcorder

Sound has vanished!

Help!!! I have a Sony Handycam DCR-SR40 and it has been fantastic up till now. A few weeks ago at my daughters school performance I must have hit a button or something silly and I have completely lost sound on the camera! I have looked through every menu I can think of and I cannot figure out what I may have done wrong.

Can anyone help???? Everything else works beautifully it's there is just no audio.

Thanks!!!

I will check. I am certain I hit something because it was literally a split second thing, one minute audio, the next minute...This would be something on the outside of the machine perhaps?

Thank you for taking the time to answer. I can tell you everything about computers and software programs but other electronics baffle me! :-)

Solved the problem on the Mac...

The problem I found was that the movies are some sort of MPEG-2 format (I think)...

You can drag the mpeg-2 movies from the camera to your desktop, but if you try to play it on the computer there is no sound track. The way around this is to download a program called MPEG Streamclip from a company called Squared 5 (there is both a MAC and PC version).

You can convert it to just about anything (I convert to mpeg 4), and when you do suddenly the soundtrack appears. The conversion time is MUCH quicker than exporting from iMovie... it looks like 3-4x's faster than real time.

Hope this helps :-)

Look for a physical switch or menu that toggles between internal or external mic - should be internal, or a switch or menu that toggles between mic or line, should be mic input.

This is usually caused by a failed component in the power circuit within the camera and can be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it’s not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired qualified service technician.
