Replacement hard drives are pretty cheap ($50 to 100) at places like newegg.com I could give more detailed information if you posted the model of the system in question, as you need to ID if the system has an EIDE or SATA drive

HP Pavilion laptop - HDD issue?

very possible a hdd issue
you can get solid state hard drives ( far superior to disc hard drives) for around $90.00 for 125 gb
sshd drives have no moving parts , are much faster in start up and can get more data stored than a disc hard drive
KIngston brand are very reliable and can be got from the net--e-bay
Install one and use the os win 8 disc to install the os into the computer
if you don'y have a disc , you can install from the web and use the activation code you have for the disc
on installing the sshd, you will need to go into bios and change the boot from hhd to cd or external hard drive
that puts the os on to the new sshd and when that iscompleted you can then go back into bios and change to boot from external ( disc) to sshd

I got a new computer and need to install Maxtor on my new machine. How do I do thei?

If you mean the Maxtor disk utility that comes with raw hard drives, it is NOT necessary to install this in order for the drive to work. If the new computer already has an OS on it and is working, what part of the Maxtor utility is it that you think you need? The OS has all the tools you would need to work with the disk. Or you could always download a 3rd party app to do the specific task. If this is regarding an external drive, again the new computer ( and OS) will have whatever tools you would need to work with the disk. In fact you should only have to plug the external disk into the USB port and the new computer will find it and ask how you want to use it, etc. The Maxtor disk utilities that came with raw drives is pretty much obsolete when used with a current Windows or Mac OS.

HARD DRIVE NOT EXIST ERROR!!!

If you installed Linux successfully on your hard disk then the hard disk is OK.
If you are installing Windows Xp and it does not detect the hard disk but the BIOS detects the hard disk then -
The problem is that XPinstallation CD does not have a SATA driver, unless you have a SATA drive on adisk etc. and can install the driver when XP asks for a hard drive driver then,XP cannot detect the hard disk and therefore won't install XP.The FIX.Go into the BIOS anddisable the SATA drive (enable IDE emulation), this will make XP think it is aIDE/PATA hard disk. Then you can install XP normally. When Windows hasbeen installed then install all the device drivers (including the SATA driver),then shut down and boot up and got into the BIOS and enable the SATA drive.

How can i install new os on my blank hard drive of my laptop? the lcd of my laptop is unresponsive,,,

Installing the OS without the display will be a difficult process. The best option is to remove the Hard Drive and connect it to other Computer and then reinstall the OS. Later, you can connect the Hard Drive to your Computer.

Attempt to turn on computer, no OS install windows

Marginal hard drive, hard drive cable, or hard drive controller (on motherboard).

Other suspect parts may be the CD ROM drive you're trying to run the OS install from. It may also be flaky, causing you to think you're loading the OS, but not really and not reporting errors until you discover the OS is not completely installed.

First thing to do is pull the HDD and cable out, reseat firmly and try again. May as well do the same for the CD/DVD drive.

Error loading operating system

The Thinkpad T23 is old, and would not worth fixing. Save your money on a new one.
The problem with your laptop is that the hard disk or the disk controller has failed and therefore cannot find the operating system on the hard disk. The error message states that it can't see the operating system that is on the hard disk.
.
If the hard disk is the only thing that has failed then you can buy a new hard disk and install Windows operating system on it to get a working laptop again. You will also most likely need to download the device drivers (ie. video, audio, modem, LAN adapter etc.) from IBM to install after the Windows installation.

Try to borrow a 2.5" drive or get a cheap one from a computer market and fit it to your laptop to see if the BIOS can detect the hard drive. If it works then outlay some money to buy a decent size hard drive, no point wasting money if the laptop is faulty.

Problem installing OS

I think Partition Magic 8 screwed up the hard drive. I suggest, try a different hd, or if you don't have one, go to www.ebay.com and get like a 5 or 10GB hd and try that, cause if it works with a different hd, it proves that Partition Magic 8 screwed up the drive. Anything else, try a new IDE or SATA cable cause sometimes they go bad. try a different OS cd. Anything else I could say is bring it to a local computer store and see what they can do.
