Question about Philips HDRW720 DVD Recorder

5 Answers

Philips HDRW720 won't turn on

After hitting the power button the machine will appear to be powering on because the word "Philips" is displayed, but after about twenty seconds or so a red light around the disk tray flashes as does a red light around the dvd control buttons.
I can't even get the dish drive to open during start up.

Anybody got any ideas? Thanks

Exactly the same problem. If I hold in the play button when connecting the power, the self test runs then displays 'FAIL 0900 05'

    Anyone got any ideas?

I have this same piece of ****, the HDRW720. I'm not sure why I bought it in the first place except it seemed to have very good features at the time. When I perform the test as was described, i.e. holding down the play button and plugging the thing back in, i get FAIL 080107.

It does seem like the thing is stuck in "Dealer Demo Mode". I've also tried the suggested solutions in the manual like, holding down the ON/STANDBY switch while plugging the unit in. That doesn't work, at least for me. Or holding the STOP button down on the remote while holding down the EJECT button on the unit (that actually takes two people). That was another suggestion in the manual and that also didn't work. I also tried standing on my head and holding my breath while plugging it back in and that didn't work either! Philips NEVER AGAIN.

I have exactly the same problem, however when I run the test at start up (holding the play button while turning the unit on) everything checks out alright and I get a "PASS" What now?

My problem seems to be the saim, and when I do the self-test it results in a fail 2100 02. Anybody knows what this code means, and how tio gety it fixed?

  • guiguite Jun 07, 2008

Does the same thing but will not even go into the internal test mode.

1/2 way through watching a recorded film when the unit had a hiss fit with the red light around the tray going off and on. It rebooted itself two or three time but no error sign came up and now just keeps going around the reboot sequence and I can't even get the tray to open. Tried the power and on button but makes no difference.

    Any ideas....Mike

I have the exact same problem, red light around the DVD tray and record button flash and the unit powers back down. I ran the self test and get "Fail - 080107". I suspect it is a faulty or severly fragmented hard drive but there appears to be no functionality with this PVR to defrag or format the hard drive from the menu system like there is on so many of the newer units out there. I opened it up and see it is just a standard Maxtor 120GB, PATA drive. In fact, I can find the same one for $35 on Ebay. Problem is, how to format it? Does anybody have the formatting CD?

i have the exact same problem with my phillips hdrw720/17 recorder.

i was in the process of archiving a movie when it froze up (its happened before) but this time when it shut itself down it tried to reboot itself but just keeps shutting off it never goes past the "phillips" menu screen. also it wont eject the dvd i was burning. i see this post is quite old but has anyone found a solution yet? i tried the (hold the power button in) and plug into the outlet but no error is displayed. i'm wondering if something overheated ?

    any help? thanks!

Okay. I found that there IS a manual release for the disc tray UNDERNEATH the unit. It is a sort of toggle lever that you have to slide to the other side and that releases the disc. The Manual does not even mention this manual release lever!

Also, it may be hidden or covered by a paper like cover.

Once I cleared the disc out, I was able to re-set and re-start the unit.

I had a lot of problems with my electronic program guide crashing my unit and I discovered the solution. Since many of you are seeing similar problems (ie the red DVD bay flash&crash), I suspect my repair may be of help.

I brought this unit for repair, self diagnostic reported "FAIL 080107", the repair center said the hard disk has failed, and a replacement 120gig hard disk would cost $480.00. So I said LOL and picked up the broken unit. For $480.00 I can buy about 2TB of hard drive space for my PC and turn it into a PVR. I will attempt to replace the hard disk and perhaps upgrade the firmware for the unit, i think the latest firmware version is available for download from philips support site and the version is 3.2. you extract the zip file burn the disk at 4X and finalize it. Then insert it into the player and it should say reading then download then upto 45mins later the CD tray will open and you just hit the standby button to cycle the unit. I have not tried any of this as my unit is so fsck'ed i can't even eject the CDROM at the moment. I will try this over the next couple days. goodluck :(

Guest, the error code 2100 02 means the digital board is not communicating with the hard disk. Possible reasons? the digital board is pooped, the connector or the hard drive are not working. Likely, this can be fixed by replacing the hard disk inside the unit, but be warned the new hard disk from philips is about $400, not worth it since the unit isn't worth $200 any more (imo. not worth 200 cents) anyway. Not to mention if you try to repair it yourself you need to format the hard disk with a special philips CD for formatting the HDD. If you could get your hands on the exact model of hard disk and find a place to buy the CD the philips part number is: 312278590710 and is available at for about $37.00. good luck :)

In case anyone decides to look further into replacing the hard disk on this unit, I just replaced the HDD with a hitachi 250gig deskstar, mind you it probably will only use 120GB of the whole drive, but the point is, you take out the defective drive and find someone who knows how to byte copy one drive to another in linux. (or you can get a live linux CD and try it yourself with the dd command). So after all the data that you copied (approx. 4hours depends on how badly damaged the source drive is) from the defective drive on to the new one, replace and turn on, worked for me. So this HDD does not have to be a Maxtor dimondmax 16, it can be any other IDE ATA drive that is 120GB or more in size.

I think Philips must have a timer on this unit to fail, I am also having the same problem and I think the hard drive failed. I currently have installed a new drive and held the play and open close buttons down when the power comes up. It will ask for a cd to be installed when initializing the drive. I am currently searching for that cd and will let you know if any luck with the install.

After testing the drive I found it to be good. When researching I found an internal test built into the unit.

Disconnect the power plug of the unit, while holding down the Play button on the front panel restore power to the unit. Continue to hold the Play button until the display shows Nucleus and flashing numbers. After the brief test it will Pass or Fail with an error number. Post the error code and I might lead you into the right direction.

  • Stephen Yanowich Jun 24, 2008

The error code has a Nucleus Group and Number followed by an Error Code.

    The Nucleus 2100 references

Check the communication between the digital board and the hard disk drive by querying the device type of the device type of the hard disk.

The Hard drive 282206200034 is no $399.80 available from which you can just drop in since it is formatted. If you can find a hard disk which is rare due to the small size no one buys, it can be formatted to just drop it in. You will need the hard drive ( 120GB ATA), the PC communication cable 312278590017 $22.75 and the Service DVD 312278590710 $36.96 which will allow you to format the hard disk for the unit. I would do this for you but you might have other problems with the system which can only be found with more diagnostics after the drive is installed. Or it could be a drop in and go.

For the unit which is stuck in trade (demo) mode,

    Unplug the unit.

Simultaneously hold the Stop + Open close while plugging in the unit.

I hooked the ps3 to the philips tv. turned on the ps3, AV1 displays in the corner. Nothing else happens, I am expecting the ps3 logo

    give this a try...

Leave the TV running, go over to your PS3 and turn it off.

Once its off, hold the power button down till you hear a beep, KEEP HOLDING THE POWER BUTTON till you hear a double beep. The PS3 will shut itself off.

Give the device a couple of seconds, then hit the power button one last time (just turn it on, you don't have to hold it).

To do this, the machine will need to be reset, allowing you to choose the language and country on the initial setup menu. You will lose the current date, time and fax data:

    1) With the power on, hold down the power button for approx. four seconds - the machine will power off

    2) Press and HOLD the <Back> and <Start> buttons and press the power button - keep holding these two buttons for approx. twenty seconds, then release

    3) The "Initial Setup" menu will appear - use the arrow keys to select the desired language

    4) Press <OK>

    5) The "Country Select" menu will appear - select your country from the list

    6) Press <OK>

You may now reset the date, time and input your faxing information as required.

    I hope this helps!
