Question about Honeywell Programmable Thermostat Heater

2 Answers

No heat! Hello, I have a boiler with a hot water tank. When i switch on my central heating it lights up fine and burns for about 2-3 minutes and then switches itself off. I can hear what sounds like water boiling before it switches off (goes back to just the pilot light). The radiators remain cold during this time. The heating system is about 15 years old and has given intermittent problems over the past year, but it has rectified itself after 2-3 days of trying it. Any ideas what the problem might be? Thanks

Hello, thanks for your reply. I don't know a huge amount about central heating but as far as I can gather I have two zone valves (small metal boxes with a small metal lever at the end). The lever on one of them loosens when I switch on the water and the other one loosens when I switch on the heat. The levers are still loosening even though the system isn't working. There is also a small pump/circulator close to the valves. That doesn't make any noise when I switch on the heating. The system is called a Honeywell S plan (if that helps). The actual boiler is located behind a false wall at the back of my gas fire so I don't know what temperature it is set to. However, the pilot light and the starter for the light are accessible and that has a temperature gauge beside it, which is currently set on high (no temperature just low-high).
The water doesn't heat up either (just the same start up of the boiler, which then switches off after a few minutes), however the water does heat up when I switch on the electric immersion.
I appreciate any advice you can give me.
    Thanks

I took your advice and got someone in this afternoon. He replaced the pump there and then and all is working well again. He charged £135 for the pump plus labour. It was the best price I could get after ringing around a few other companies. I wish I was a plumber and could charge prices like that!
Thanks a lot for your help.

Ger, do you get your hot water off the same boiler and it that working alright? How many zones and are they controled by zone valves (little boxes mounted on the pipes) or circulators (small pumps)?

Boiling water sounds can indicate hard water deposits in the boiler or that your aquastat is set too high allowing the water to heat up higher than it should. Check your boiler guage and let me know what temperature you are recording. Get back to me with the answers to my questions, we'll figure it out.

Thank you with the info, it does help. The levers on the small boxes indicate there is a call for heat, however the boiler is not coming on. Either you have a bad aquastat relay or a broken wire going to the aquastat. It is time to get a proffessional in there and diagnosis the issue.

No central heating back boiler

back boiler run from a gas fire? check the instructions to operate the gas heat to the back boiler not just the fire
I presume that this a fully pumped system - air lock doubtful There maybe on/off valves on the pipes to and from the back boiler [situate close to cylinder] make sure they are on - anticlockwise turn
or there could be a blockage in the outlet from header tank usually in the loft. or If there is no water in it maybe the mains cold feed it is off.
Note if no water in it DO NOT USE the back boiler
