How do i add a password

To secure your Internet connection from unauthorized access you need you encrypt your router's wireless settings.
To connect to your wireless router, the router's wirelesssettings needs to be configured with the SSID, encryption etc. and also thewireless cards in all the laptops/computers needs to be configured with theserouter's wireless settings. Then the laptops/desktop computers can communicatewith your wireless router.
Connect a LAN cable from the Linksys to the LAN port on your computer.
Open a browser and enter the Linksys configuration URL
http://192.168.1.1
The default login = admin
The default PW = admin
You can protect your router by changing the default admin PW (write it down andput it in a safe place)
Go to the wireless configuration and set up the SSID and WPA or WPA2encryption.
Apply these settings to the wireless card in your laptop/computer.

I am using time warner cable high speed internet. and trying to connect my ps3 through a belkin router but it is not working. the wireless icon pops up from the router but what is a WPA Key??? HELP!!!

WPA === Wireless Protected Access

It's a level of encryption between the router and each wireless device, to add "security" to your wireless traffic.

Use an Ethernet cable to connect the network-port on a computer to one of the LAN ports on the router.

Restart the computer.

Start Internet Explorer, and connect to the web-server "inside" the router.

From this web-interface, you can set an SSID and set the encryption-level (e.g., WPA) and you can set a password/pass-phrase/pass-key for your wireless network.

Use the same SSID and password on your PS3.

Where do I find my WEP key

To access the web-based utility, launch the web browser on
your computer (INTERNET EXPLORER), and enter the Router’s default IP address, 192.168.1.1, in the Address field/bar. Then, press Enter. A password request screen will appear. Leave the User name field blank then default password admin. (You can set a new password from the Administration tab’s Management screen.) Click OK to continue.
The Internet Setup section configures the Router to your Internet connection. Most of this information can be obtained through your ISP/ your internet provider. Internet Connection Type Select the type of Internet connection your ISP provides from the drop-down menu. By default, the Router’s Internet Connection Type is set to Automatic Configuration - DHCP, which should be kept only if your ISP supports DHCP or you are connecting through a dynamic IP address. 68be046.jpg IMPORTANT: If you are using WEP encryption, always remember that each device in your wireless network MUST use the same WEP your wireless network will not function properly.
WEP Encryption Select a level of WEP encryption, 64 bits
10 hex digits or 128 bits 26 hex digits. The default is
64 bits 10 hex digits.
Passphrase Enter a Passphrase to automatically generate WEP keys. Then click Generate.
Key 1-4 If you did not enter a Passphrase, enter the WEP key(s) manually.
Click Save Settings to apply your change

Secure network

Normal 0 You should use the strongest form of encryption that all of your wireless devices can support. If they can all do WPA2, then use WPA2. Otherwise you can use WPA.
With WPA or WPA2 you should also use a strong key (sometimes called password or passphrase).

To set up wireless security, you must use a computer that is wired to the router.

Where to find the router settings: The other settings are all found in the "Wireless" or the "Security" section of the router's setup pages, located at 192.168.1.1

First, give your router a unique SSID. Don't use "linksys".
Make sure "SSID Broadcast" is set to "enabled".

Next, leave the router at its default settings (except for the unique SSID), and then use your pc to connect wirelessly to the router. Test your wireless Internet connection and make sure it is working correctly. You must have a properly working wireless connection before setting up wireless security.

To implement wireless security, you need to do one step at a time, then verify that you can still connect your wireless computer to the router.

Next, encrypt your wireless system using the highest level of encryption that all of your wireless devices will support. Common encryption methods are:

WEP - poor (see note below)
WPA (sometimes called PSK, or WPA with TKIP) - good
WPA2 (sometimes called PSK2, or WPA with AES) - best

WPA and WPA2 sometimes come in versions of "personal" and "enterprise". Most home users should use "personal". Also, if you have a choice between AES and TKIP, and your wireless equipment is capable of both, choose AES. With any encryption method, you will need to supply a key (sometimes called a "password").

The wireless devices (computers, printers, etc.) that you have will need to be set up with the SSID, encryption method, and key that matches what you entered in the router.

Retest your system and verify that your wireless Internet connection is still working correctly.

And don't forget to give your router a new login and password.

**Picking Passwords (keys): You should never use a dictionary word as a password. If you use a dictionary word as a password, even WPA2 can be cracked in a few minutes. When you pick your login password and encryption key (or password or passphrase) you should use a random combination of capital letters, small letters, and numbers, but no spaces. A login password should be 12 characters or more. WPA and WPA2 passwords should be at least 24 characters. Note: Your key, password, must not have any spaces in it.

Most home users should have their routers set so that "remote management" of the router is disabled. If you must have this option enabled, then your login password must be increased to a minimum of 24 random characters.

One additional issue is that Windows XP requires a patch to run WPA2. Go to Microsoft Knowledgebase, article ID=917021 and it will direct you to the patch.
Sadly, the patch is not part of the automatic Windows XP updates, so lots of people are missing the patch.

Note:
WEP is no longer recommended. The FBI has demonstrated that WEP can be cracked in just a few minutes using software tools that are readily available over the Internet.

Cant connect to my wireless network

You have to connect to the router's Control Panel. Here are some directions in connecting to your router's control panel then setting up the encryption to a more secure type:

In order to secure your connection you need to gain access to yourrouter's control panel. To do this we go toStart>Programs>Accessories>Command Prompt. From here type in:ipconfig
Press ENTER to execute the command. A list should bereturned listing some IP Address. Look for the one associated with,"Default Gatewaty."

Here is a picture.

Afterward openyour Internet Browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc...) and type theIP Address associated with the default gateway into the address field ofthe browser. DO NOT add www. or .com. Afterward press ENTER or click GOas if you wanted to visit a website.

Here is a picture.

Once you'reat the control panel you will probably be asked to log in. If you do notknow your login details you can always try the default. To find theseyou can either search your router's user manual or head to the onlinesearch engines entering your router's manufacturer's name, the router'smodel #, and the words, "default password" into the same search requestto bring up the default login credentials. For example:

Linksys WRT54G default password

Here is a picture.

Ifyou still can't manage to log in to your router's control panel youwill have to contact the technical support department of your router'smanufacturer asking them for assistance in resetting the login user IDand password of the router.

Once you manage to log in to your router's control panel. Look for anything hinting Wirelesssecurity or Wireless settings. Once found, look for the region whichcontrols settings on wireless encryption. You will want to encrypt your wireless connection with the WPA-PSK authentication method using the TKIP encryption. If there is no such option, just use WPA encryption.

Afterward use a pass-phrase to make a wireless securitypassword, or just make your own password. Make sure to write down thepass-phrase and/or the password as you will need it to connect to yourwireless connection at a later time (This is your Wireless Encryption Key). After you save your settings inthe router control-panel your Wireless Internet Connection should be secured.

Let us know how everything turns out and if we can assist you further.

if you are talking about wireless security, you will find the settings under Wireless Security in the routers setup page.  The default will be HTTP://192.168.1.1  no username, default password of "admin"  If you are talking about the router's password itself, you will find that under Administration in the same setup page.
