Question about Brother IntelliFAX 4100 Laser Fax

Need to know how to use maintenance mode to change compatibility to basic

We have four 4100e's and one of them at a branch location is unable to receive faxes from 3-4 of our customers. Much troubleshooting and discussions with various techs has finally led us to the conclusion that we need to use Maintenance Mode to change the compatibility to basic, or somehow turn off ECM and set baud to 9600.

I'm having a difficult time getting the right folks at Brother to tell me just how to do this.
I can't find any "maintenance" manuals for the machine online either.
Please help.

Thanks anyway, but I already have the manual... it doesn't cover "maintenance mode".

I finally got someone knowledgeable from Brother to contact me. He walked me through some complicated procedures to turn off ECM and to change the baud rate.

Here's what he gave me in a nutshel:

    Enter Maintenance Mode:

    1. Unplug power from rear of Fax machine, hold the Menu button while plugging power back in. Continue to hold the Menu button until “Maintenance” appears in the LCD window.

    2. There are no helps for the Maintenance mode. Follow parameter change procedures to the letter.

Changing Baud Rate from Automatic to 9600:

    1. Enter 10 (one, zero). This will bring up WSW00 on the LCD window.

    2. Change the 00 to 19. If the baud rate is set to automatic, the numbers that appear will be 11100010.

    3. Change the 11100010 to 01100010. This sets the baud rate to 9600.

    4. Press the “Set” button just below the LCD window.

    5. Press “Stop”.

    6. Enter 99. This will exit Maintenance mode and make the fax ready to use again.

Changing the Error Correction Mode (ECM):

    1. Enter Maintenance Mode (see directions above).

    2. Enter 10. This will bring up WSW00 on the LCD window.

    3. Change the 00 to 22. If the ECM is turned on, the numbers that appear will be 00000000.

    4. Change the 00000000 to 11000000. This turns of ECM.

    5. Press the “Set” button just below the LCD window.

    6. Press “Stop”.

    7. Enter 99. This will exit Maintenance mode and make the fax ready to use again.

You can disable Overseas mode to and that will help with ECM mode. But to lower the baud rate to 9600, I am not sure. Sorry.

Need maintenace codes for brother 4100e fax

Power off the printer for 15 minutes and power back on again. If that fixes the problem then OK.
If not then go into maintenance mode -
Press and hold the menu/set key while turning on the machine. Wait until it comes completely up before releasing. It should say Maintenance in the display.

If not press function,*,2,8,6,4 within two seconds. It should say maintenance in the display. Or on some machines Menu,*,2,8,6,4 within 2 seconds.

Once you get it into maintenance hit 91 to do a parameter reset and than 99 to get out of maintenance.

You reset all Brother fax machines the same way. Press function, *, 2,8,6,4 all within 2 seconds to place the machine into the maintanence mode. Press 0,1 to perform a parameter reset. this will restore the machine to factory default settings. press 9,9 to exit maint mode.

Procedure is:

1) Unplug machine.
2) Hold down menu key. Plug in machine.
3) Release menu key.
4) Enter 91
5) Enter 99
6) Machine will warm up.
7) Press Reports key, then 1. This will test if the machine can
print.

I get a message stating unable to init. 4F

Hi there
With some Brother printers you can try this.

Access the internal maintenance mode by pressing the Menu/Set button, then press * 2 8 6 4 within 2 seconds. This should put you in the maintenance mode menu. Enter 80, and then scroll down with the arrow down (round) key. You'll find an entry listed as purge count. If number is over 6000, enter 2 7 8 3.

This will reset the purge count value. Then the printer will restart, hopefully without the annoying cannot clean message.

Some times this happens because of using cheap compatible ink cartridges if this is the case change the ink cartridges.

Please come back and just gave a vote, it will gave me some satisfaction to know am helping some one so I will keep on helping.

We have a Brother Intellifax 4100e, business class laserfax, superg3 fax machine in our office. When the fax machine goes into sleep mode, we can't get it to come out of sleep mode unless we unplug it and...

Try changing the sleep mode settings. Sometimes it's set too long or too short. You can try the perimeter reset as well. The instructions I have for that is as follows:

hit the menu button and numbers *2864 (star before the four numbers)
then hit 91(set) wait a few seconds for the maintenance screen to return
then hit 99(set) when it beeps saying completed that could fix your problem.

Hope this helps.

Other (non-FAX) models: Press the Menu/Set and Black Start keys. Next press the “up arrow” key four times to enter the maintenance mode).
2) Press the 8 then 0 keys in the initial stage of the maintenance mode to call up the machine’s log information list (function code 80).
