Phaser 8400 The image is sticking to the drum on the right side of the printer. This caused jam after jam. I have installed a new maintenace kit but still have the problem.

The part of the image that is staying on the drum is only on the right side (looking at printer from the front) .. about 2 to 3 inches you can see on the drum. The jam is always as the page is leaving the drum on it way out of the printer.

The 8400 has a known issue with the plastic that was used for the tilt mechanism on the oiling roller. If you look inside where the cartridge is removed you should see a crack that opens when pressure is applied. The high heat causes this unit to crack. You need that part. Or some good super glue. I have fixed 3 of my 8400's with this same issue.

Good Luck

Replace your maintence kit.
It is most likely very black if you pull out the maintenance tray.
You are not getting enough lubricant on the drum.
That will cause jams because the paper sticks to the drum.
This will resolve your problem.

Sometimes you can also get bad Ink Sticks.
I have witnesses swithing vendors of the image sticks cure this also.

You could have a bad drum wiper also, but that would be the least likely problem.

Right now I would suspect some bad ink.

Also have you run the image Resolve Streaks and smears setups? That will run the cleaning setup and may help.

  • Rick Kasper Dec 14, 2007

Well, it seems the wiper blade is worn out.
There is a rubber blade that moves up and down on the drum to clean residual image off the drum between prints.
Since you have done all the other things, The wiper must be work and not cleaning that section of the drum.

You might have a small piece of paper stuck in drum cavity.

Think about what drum looks like is problem inboard or outboard as it sits in machine, and look at the cavity or if drum is in cartridge since I'm familiar with process but not the actual unit, The wires that also transfer the image onto paper could be blocked in that area, preventing toner/ ink transfer to paper.

The process uses Charge,Transfer,Clean.
the last two appear to be in contention for the problem

I have a xerox 8400 printer and the ink is sticking to the drum. I have installed a new maitinance kit but am still having the problem. Please help

There are three possible solutions.
Try running the 'remove print smears' routine from the print quality troubleshooting menu. You may have to run it 5 or 6 times to completely clean the drum.
It may be that the drum maintenance pivot plate is cracked, this causes the plate to press the maintenance kit on to the drum unevenly. You will hear a ripping sound as the paper exits the printer, this is due to it literally ripping the ink off the drum. Being an 8400, if your pivot plate (the assembly that your maintenance kit slides on/in to) is white (off white) in colour, my money is on that being cracked.
The third possibility is that the cam shaft that pushes the pivot plate up to the drum has loose/spinning cams which again, will cause the plate to press unevenly.
Hope this helps.

One side of the drum picks up the print from other documents and smears the print on to fresh documents. How do I clean the drum?

You don't clean the drum. You either need to replace your maintenance kit , or my better guess is your using generic ink sticks and you need to use the sticks xerox makes for the machine.
The problem is that your not getting effective cleaning from you maintanance kit

Xerox Phaser 8400: Our printer keeps jamming. Some of the ink is staying on the right edge of the drum and it seems as the paper goes through the printer it gets stuck on that ink. We use only Xerox ink...

There are no less than 5 places on this model where you might clear a paper jam. Is it possible you still have a small bit of paper stuck somewhere?

Black lettering on drum and is transferred to printed document. Also paper jams continually and sounds as if it is tearing when it exits the machine.

Paper Jam at exit holder

Hi jam_es_2001:
The roller in the maintenace kit applies a thin layer of oil to the image drum. When the image is applied to the drum the oi prevents the image from sticking. The cleaning blade cleans the drum after the image is applied to paper. After the image is applied to the paper the drum is cleaned by the cleaning blade and new oil is applied to the drum for the next image. Check the roller in maintence kit to see if it is dry, if it is replace the maintenance kit.

Hope this helps

Ink not being removed from metal drum, causing jam

Normally indicates that the mintenance kit is drying out and not properly lubricating the drum.
Or non xerox ink sticks have been known to cause that.

Xerox Phaser 8550 Maintenace Kit is stuck in the

If you remove the right side cover, you can operate the process drive gearbox with a straight-blade screwdriver on the end of the shaft (bottom of printer right in front of maintenance kit). This is the end of the drum maintenance camshaft. Rotate clockwise slowly. It's possible that the cams have cracked and rotated on the shaft. This is the weak point on these printers. If so, they may not be in sync. Good luck.

Ink is sticking to the drum of my 8400, how can it be cleaned, and not happen again? This is causing paper jams.

Pull the maintence kit and look in the hole. If your printhead maintenance pivot plate (that the maintenance kit hangs on) is white, it needs to be repalced. It's probably cracked and flexing, not lubricating the drum properly. At the same time, the DM camshaft should probably be replaced. The cams crack on the thin side and rotate on the shaft, causing the maintenance process to malfunction.

1-the blanking lamps that erase the image from the drum from the previous copy, and making it ready for the next image is bad

Maintanance kit replace

Problem:
The machine displays the Replace Maintenance Kit after the Maintenance Kit has been replaced.
Cause:
There may two causes for this issue.
  1. The machine does not recognize that the Maintenance Kit was removed. This would likely be caused by a defective Drum Maintenance Pivot Plate.
  2. The machine corrupts the CRUM on the new Maintenance Kit. This may be caused by a defective Drum Maintenance Pivot Plate or IO Board.
Solution: thumbsup.gif Fixed! thumbsdn.gif Did not fix.
  1. While the Replace Maintenance Kit message is displayed, remove the Maintenance Kit. If the displayed message does not change to "Maintenance Kit Missing," replace the Drum Maintenance Pivot Plate and install a new Maintenance Kit.
  2. While the Replace Maintenance Kit message is displayed, remove the Maintenance Kit. If the displayed message changes to "Maintenance Kit Missing," replace the IO Board and then install a different NEW Maintenance Kit. If the problem persists, replace the Drum Maintenance Pivot Plate and install a different NEW Maintenance Kit.
