I have dep cleaned many times but the red ink will not print. I have replaced the ink in case it was a problem with that particual ink cartridge but same problem. Should I buy a cleaning kit? This is a replacement machine for the one I had under warranty and only came with a 90 day warranty (Staples voided the 1st warranty when they replaced the machine- bogus)

Tri color cartridge contains Cyan,Magenta & Yellow color inks, mono cartridge contain black ink, combination/mixing with these inks desired color out put will prints on paper.. If any one or more inks are missing/dried, result mis matched print outs on paper.
In your case I feel it's Magenta ink is not firing..,nozzles may clogged, try to clean the nozzles with solvents & try it...If no result ,. replace the color cartridge..

Maybe your print head is clooged (red) Then most about 98% are more likely to be an ink clog which just needs to be unclogged using something like print head cleaning solution Basically, if a print head has been left unused for some time... moisture inside the ink begins to evaporate and instead of liquid ink, a thick inky jelly begins to form inside the print head.
When this occurs white lines appear in prints and most people not realizing the problem, will replace their inks... But when that does not work. Some assume they have an electrical fault, and replace their print head, others will replace their printer !
But provided there is no obvious print head damage? In 98% of cases it simply needs a little patience and print head cleaning solution injecting directly into the print head to dissolve the dried ink trapped inside. This will dissolve the clog and allow your expensive ink to flow once again. Most will then print as new.
In many cases after a printer has not been used for a long period of time, the ink will become dry. Most printers will have a "Clean print heads" option. Also trying to print a page or two may resolve the issue.
If it continues however, the printer may need replaced. Dried ink can block the print heads and in some cases can not be unblocked without taking the printer apart, which will void the warranty.
Black printer ink in HP Printer may fail to be recognized by the printer. Most times an error message will be sent indicating that something is wrong with the black print cartridge. Sometimes the printer may accept to print with the black ink, but the printouts may have horizontal lines and very illegible letters. In both cases be sure using correct ink. Use of generic ink can lead to leakage of catrridge seats do to crossion from inferrior ink quality (per Cannon). Be sure ink in proper locations - see manual. Run the maintenance proceedures: cleaning then print nozzle pattern. If all colors are not proper after two or three cleanings, perform deep cleaning. Print nozzle pattern after each cleaning. This should clear up problem. If not, print head may need replacement.
Hope this will give you hints. To pin point directly you need to replace printer head. But before replacing please consider suction cartridge caps or nozzle by cleaning and freeing clogged airways by dettaching manually. I understand that the long time being not used has caused the problem. However if you can still use black and other colors then used it than complicating downtime in repairing procedures. Yes, you are right no need to clean deeper more than three times it will consume inks half empty. Have a nice day.
If yes, buy original brother ink carts and do the cleaning cycle again. If you are lucky the printhead isnt clogged due to the third party ink which has not the additives and glycerin needed for the printhead to run without probs.
In case the head is clogged there is nothing more what you can do. Sorry! A replacement might costs more than a new mfc 440cn!
