Question about IBM ThinkPad 770 Notebook

IBM 770 screen blacks out sporadically

I have replaced the littel circuit board and indeed the entire screen assembly, only to still have the screen intermittently black out for no apparent reason. My ten year old daughter discovered that closing the screen halfway and restarting will get the screen to work fairly often. I need to fix this one if at all possible, no money for a nicer new laptop.

Re: IBM 770 screen blacks out sporadically

If you have an external monitor, try plugging up to that to see if it is an LCD screen issue or if it is a video card issue. If the monitor does not show the same symptons then it is the LCD screen. If it does then it is the video card. Usually the motherboard will need to be replaced if it is the video. If the screen, then it will need to be replaced.

Hope this helps!!

How do i fix black screen when powering up

Back - light problem. Check and replace damaged component/s at its back-light inverter board, or replace this board as card basis. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Surf the site with patience. Pull up older posts. It will be best to replace the inverter board as card basis.
In some models of LCD screen; the backlight inverter and its T'Con board will be a part of the panel itself, and will be a built-in type inside the LCD panel. If so, they can't be replaced. In this case; a panel replacement is the only repair. For some other models, the backlight inverter section circuit will be a part of the main power supply regulator [SMPS]. To such sets, the power supply section circuit too should be troubles hooted. Contact any service technician. The circuit will differ with models and versions.
Type in the brand name of your device, in the search box [at the top right] of the display window and the Search will start at once as you type in, and will show you all the related posts. It will make surf easy.

A glass of wine was spilled on my laptop. It would still power up but the screen was black. Now it won't even power up. Is it worth getting repaired, or should I get a new one?

You should fully disassemble the laptop & thoroughly inspect its inside. Look for any traces of liquid on the circuit boards & on other components. On circuit boards, liquid damage appears in the form of whitish traces. These needs to be wiped off. This can be done using a tooth brush moistened with few drops of hand sanitizer liquid.
Check all internal connectors & make sure that no liquid seeped into them. Dry them if needed.
When you are done, re-assemble back the laptop.
If the liquid fell on the keyboard & you found out that the keyboard is no longer working, then you will have to replace the keyboard.

If it still does not work, the motherboard might be damaged & needs to be replaced.

I have a hP pavillion dv2620us. I get an intermittent black screen whenever I use the laptop. During normal use, the laptop screen just goes dark/black. There is still power to the laptop and you can sort...

1. Test using an external monitor. If it works, then either the screen bulb or the inverter board might be defective.
2. Test the inverter board. Easiest way to do it if you have a good screen with a good bulb. Connect the good screen to the inverter board & test it. If it lights up, then the inverter board is good. If it did not, then the inverter board is bad & needs to be replaced.
3. If the inverter board is good, then we are left with the possibility that the screen bulb is bad. To fix this, we will need to replace the LCD screen.

No need, the screen is indeed dying and there is nothing that even the can do to save it.
You must replace it, and quickly, otherwise when it will finally fail completely it may fry the video chip.

Screen blacks out while rest is still on, is a dv7-1285dx

This is a backlight issue. Either the HV/backlight board is going bad or the wires that go to it through the hinge is broken/making poor connection.
Rock the screen back and fourth. if it goes on and off, then it is the wires. If not then probabbly the board.
If it is the wires, then you will have to order the screen (off ebay) with the cable (unless you can order just the cable) or you will have to order the backlight board.

Had the same problem. Fixed it though. Here's how:
You'll notice that the screen comes back to life if you press down on the very top of the green line. This is because a controller circuit board behind the LCD screen (at the top) is pressure fit flat-surface-to-flat surface to the contacts on the back of the LCD. Eventually, the sticky substance that holds this circuit board in place wears thin, collects dust, etc.. and the connection between the circuit board and the lcd contact is lost. The line appears where this break in contact has occured.
So, the solution is to increase the pressure at that point to reestablish the connection. I wasn't able to remove the circuit board to clean beneath it as it seemed too likely to cause damage. Nor would I have had the right adhesive to connect it back, so I simply removed the LCD and put a bunch of tape at that point so that it would "push" with a little more pressure when screwed back into place. Worked great.
To remove the LCD, pull off the 6 feet around the screen. Remove the screws behind them. Carefully pry off bezel with a small flathead screwdriver working your way around it. Once removed there are simply 4 screws on the left and 4 more on the right of the LCD to remove. Pull out screen carefully and start stacking bits of tape on the spot where pressure seems to work best. Put it back in and see if you've made any difference. I did this with the computer on so I could verify my results. Just be careful not to short out any naked contacts.
If this doesn't work for you, at least you'll know you just need to replace the LCD, not the video card. Easily found on ebay.
