If you still have the old cartridge try reinstalling it to see if it recognizes it. If it does then the cartridge is defective and return it.
If that does not work, try cleaning the connectors on the ink carriage (the area you install the cartridge) with DISTILLED water. Make sure it is distilled. Then try reinstalling the cartridge.

Hi, I have a similar HP Color Printer on my desk. I think that your printer is set to PRINT IN GRAY SCALE - Go to Control Panel - Open 'Printer & Faxes' - Right Click the Printer and choose 'Printing Preferences - Go to Color and un-check 'Print in Gray scale as shown below: -
Hope it helps! Good Luck! Thanks for using Fixya! CreativeTECH
Check the printer's power/alarm light. If it is flashing orange, count the number of flashes. Look up the flash code in your printer's user manual to diagnose the problem.
Remove and reinstall the ink cartridges if the power/alarm light flashes 5, 7 or 15 times consecutively. This indicates that the issue is a cartridge error, an incorrectly installed cartridge, or an unrecognized cartridge. These errors can be fixed by reinstalling the ink cartridges. Make sure that you are using the correct ink cartridges for your Canon printer.
Turn on the printer and open the front cover. The ink cartridge holder should move to the replacement position.
Verify that the colored ink cartridge is inserted in the slot on the right and the black ink cartridge is inserted in the slot on the left. Swap the cartridges and reinstall them in the correct slots if necessary.
Check to see that both ink cartridges are level with one other and parallel to the top of the ink cartridge holder. If either cartridge is wedged at an angle, gently apply pressure to the cartridge until it clicks into the correct position.
Close the front cover of your Canon printer and wait while the printer initializes the newly installed cartridges. This can take a minute or two.
Remove the cartridge and check the contacts after taking it out. Now reset the cartridge back to the holder and remove printer. Now un-install the printer drivers from the PC, then reinstall and connect printer to be detected and installed. If the cartridge is not seen now there are errors in the mother board or the ink cartridge holders.
Turn on the printer and open the scanning unit. The cartridge holder unit will move to the left. There is marking on the printer housing B and C. B is black and C is color. B is the left side holder and C is the right side holder. The cartridges are inserted on a slight tilt. Angle the cartridge with the cartridge resting on its buttom, Push the cartridge in until it touch the front of the holder, then up until it click in place. You have to tilt the cartridge in order for it to snap in.
There can be several reasons to get this error on the printer screen. They are
One or more Cartridge install by date has expired or the printer has
detected that either one of the cartridge expiry date has passed by ( current date ). 2. This can also be result of defective cartridge ( though cartridge is new ) or in few occasions the printer hardware failure too.
These are the steps you can try to fix this issue :
1. Open the front access door where you find all the cartridges installed 2.
Remove all the cartridges and clean the electrical contacts/golden
contacts you find on the cartridge and also inside the printer cartridge
slot 3. Check for Date on the cartridge, If any cartridge has date
less than current date, you can try replacing the cartridge. 4. After cleaning the cartridge contacts,
install the cartridges back into the printer and close the door and wait
for the printer to go through initialization process.
Please let us know the printer model if the above steps did not resolve the issue.
HP 74 - Black ink HP 75 - Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow ink HP 99 - Photo Black, Light Cyan, and Light Magenta
You need Photo Black, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Light Cyan, and Light Magenta to print photos. To accomplish this you install the HP 99 photo cartridge where your HP 74 black cartridge usually goes and you keep the HP 75 color cartridge where it's at. I don't know why your printer told you to remove both cartridges, then reinstall the HP 75 color cartridge.
There is a small spring that holds the ink cartridge in the ink holder.
You will see it stick out from the right hand side of the ink holder
where the ink cartridge slides in. If that spring isn't being held to
the ink holder by two plastic tabs, (I.E. the plastic tabs are broken)
the printer will never recognize the cartridge. If the printer is still
under warranty I would contact HP or an authorized repair center for
HP. Both the black and color ink holder has this spring. I know of no
way to repair this kind of breakage.
