The needle and foot are no longer in line - Sewing Machines

Hope it is light weight leather. It should not be used on heavy leather.

Use a brand new heavy needle (leather). Avoid using upholstery or thicker thread as that sometimes does not feed well through the needle eye. Set it for a longer stitch. And you might want to adjust the presser foot pressure to accommodate the thicker fabric under the presser foot. Also, a leather foot, roller foot, or walking foot may be helpful--if if not available, try using parchment paper (or something similar) on the surface of the leather to help it slide under the presser foot..

Is your needle position centered? The round dial on the top right is a combination zig-zag stitch width selector and the center silver dial selects the needle position. If it is pointed at the #2, then the needle should be centered and something (probably the needle bar) has been knocked out of alignment on your machine (which would probably mean repair service).

Also, if the needle is hitting the presser foot, you probably have a straight stitch foot on your machine which requires the needle be centered. To do any decorative or zig-zag stitching, the presser foot needs to have a wide space for the needle to swing back and forth. The zig-zag foot is marked with a zero.

Does your 830 have a black needle clamp and screw instead of the standard nickel plated clamp? If not, the walking foot forked driving lever may be damaged by having used the machine with zigzag engaged. Another problem with older 830 machines is that the needle clamp has been repeatedly tightened very tight, causing the needle bar base to become damaged so that the clamp is no longer perpendicular to the direction of sewing...In other words, the clamp sets crooked on the needle bar.
The black clamp made for the walking foot had a specific diameter for the forked driving lever of the walking foot. The black clamp was also longer so that when using a wide stitch width, the driving fork of the walking foot did not collide with the needle bar clamp screw on the right side.
Please reply with your observations.

it sounds like the sewing machine needs to be checked at a sewing machine shop to see if it needs to a adjustment.

it's possible that the needle bar is out of adjustment or bent
I would suggest to have the machine checked by a service

You ought to be able to move the needle in increments from left to right. Check your manual or the Elna website for help.

Repair manuals are not avaialbe to consumers. Is the walking foot the one that came with the machine or is it a generic? The original should work,if not the presser bar is out of line and there is so much stuff inside the head end module that it should be taken to an authorized service tech.
