Question about Sony PlayStation 2 (PS2) Console

My ps2 's tray just continues to spit out the loading tray!!!

I've owned this refurbished ps2 for about 2 months now and it accidentally fell on the floor a few nights ago, the tray wouldn't come out so I opened it up and tried to fix that, but after the tray could come out, when I would power on the console the tray would just stay in the out position with the motor making an annoying whirring noise, any thoughts on this fellas?

I tried that already, but to no avail, even though the tray fits perfectly onto the little white 'tit', the console still continues to spit the tray out like yesterday's garbage, is there any other valid solution that you guys could possibly think of?

You have to take it partially apart again. Remove the Cd tray. Look at the bottom of the tray and you will see a narrow track that runs the length and turns an L. The white piece that is between the laser drive and the cd tray motor has a white tit sticking up. When you put the tray back on, be sure the tit tracks into the track on the bottom of the CD tray.

Playstation is not running many of my disk read errors on my ps2 slim 90006

Hi, You’re going to be surprised when you find out how easy this is. Read the instructions all the way through before you attempt the repair just so you’ll be familiar with the entire process. First take off the outer cover of you PS2. If you haven’t done this before, you will have to remove all the screw covers from the bottom of the unit, both plastic and rubber, these will be the only screws you will have to remove in order to take off the outer cover. {mos_sb_discuss:18}
To remove the outer cover, lift up from the rear of the unit and pull towards the front in order to clear the controller jacks and the eject/close buttons. As you remove the outer cover you will notice a small metallic ribbon cable inside the machine leading to the eject/close and reset buttons on the front of the unit, this cable is usually taped to the top of the disc tray. This cable is not a sensitive as it appears; just remove the tape holding the ribbon cable. Once the outer cover is off you need to remove the cover to the disc tray, this will require a rather small phillips screwdriver (I’ve seen a few that use a standard slotted screw). Now that the tray cover is off, the first thing to do is to clean the laser eye. All you will need is a Q-Tip dipped in alcohol. Just swab the eye a few times and allow it to dry on its own, making sure that no lint was left behind from the Q-Tip.

After the cover is off of the disk tray and the laser has been cleaned you will need to plug the unit back in, (The unit needs to be hooked up to a TV as well to test it while you have it open. You should have a DVD, a game disk with a silver or gold back and one with a purple back in order to fine tune the system to play all three.) It will be necessary to have the unit powered up to perform the repair. Press the eject button so that the tray slides forward exposing the undercarriage. At the back of the unit you should see a small white, geared wheel about the size of a quarter. This little bastard is the cause of all your problems.

This wheel changes the angle in which the disk is held. You will notice that there is a small metal tab that holds the wheel in place. Take a felt-tip marker and mark the point on the wheel that meets the tab. That way you will always know the original position that the wheel was in. Now that the orig. position has been marked, feel free to spin the wheel for a few full rotations in order to see how it changes the angle. It will only alter the angle a few degrees before it goes back to zero, after it reaches the maximum angle it will go back to flat after each full rotation. Once you’ve toyed with it to see how it works, put the wheel back to the original position that you have marked. Then advance the wheel about 1/8 of a turn and place the disk tray cover back on top of the disk tray. (You will not need to screw the tray cover back down in order to test the machine; you will only need to hold down the cover with your fingers while trying to load/test a disk) Now place a DVD in the tray and press the eject/close button in order to close the tray and load the DVD (hold down the cover as explained above). Wait to see if the DVD loads, you may have to use the browser in order to load each disk you test. If the DVD loads, eject it and load a silver backed disk, if that loads try a purple backed disk. If all three loaded successfully, congratulations you’re finished. If not, remove the tray cover, eject the disk and advance the wheel another 1/8 turn and repeat the process. It just a matter of finding an angle that will facilitate the operation of all three types of disks. Once you’ve found the proper angle and the system is operating to its full potential, close it up and let’er rip. I also do not recommend placing the PS2 on its side once you have fixed it. Although Sony says they recommend it in the owner manual, I have since seen internal Sony documents retracting the statement and attributing many malfunctions to storing and operating the unit on its side. Keep it flat at all times.

Original playstation 2- 8 years old- wont read discs.

It's a laser issue. 8 years is a long time to get out of your PS2! A lot of people's PS2s start failing within 2 or 3 years. The lasers are pretty unreliable on the PS2, especially if you use it as a DVD player. The following website sells lasers for the older PS2s and also performs repairs. However, it's a bit expensive. More than half of what you can buy a Slim PS2 for new.

I would strongly suggest, however, that you stay away from used or refurbished PS2s for the same reason! You have no idea how much life the laser has left. Either go with a brand new [not refurbished] laser in your PS2 or buy a brand new [not used, not refurbished] Playstation 2.

My ps2 will load games, but freezes-up when loading the mission. screen stays blank.

First try using a DVD lens cleaner on the unit and check the game disks for imperfections. If scratches use a scratch fix kit. If the problem still happens even with a new game then your DVD drive needs to be replaced or just buy a refurbished or new PS2. They are cheap now so why not get a new one. Good luck

Ps2 cd tray does not open and the eject button light flashes

This is the tray getting stuck on the PS2 shell/casing. I can fix mine as it does the same thing but I tap it one quick time after I hit the eject button and it will usually open. Don't try to pry the tray open or this will make the problem worse.

Use to have this problem alot, there is a track on the under side of the tray a little plastic pin follows, it has jumped the track, do not force it closed or you could break the track, hopefully it isnt broken already. Have you ever opened a ps2 before?

Ps2 trouble loading

Hi DanDancooke,

I believe your PS2 is extremely dirty and full of dust and lint. It needs to be opened up and cleaned out throughly.

I hope your in the right posting area, this is for the Phat PS2 consoles with the drawer that comes out to put the CD in. Procedure is different for Slim PS2.
  1. Disconnect power and turn the case upside down.
  2. Remove the screw covers to expose the case screws. These are little square pieces or square rubber pads. You can use a thin knife blade to pry the hard plastic squares up.
  3. Remove all the screws.
  4. Remove the Warranty sticker to the right edge of the power socket.
  5. Turn the PS2 over to set it right side up.
  6. lift the top cover from the back and pull it forward slightly to clear the CD tray. Be careful of a possibly Ribbon cable attached to the lid going to the Reset/Eject buttons. Roll the cover over to the right leaving the ribbon intact.
  7. Remove the CD tray lid.
  8. Polish the Laser lens, and remove any lint or hair from the CD area. Use Alcohol and cotton swabs to clean the laser lens. By the way, Alcohol will damage a PS2 Slim lens. All lens are not created equally.
  9. Hook up the power and A/v Cables.
  10. Remove the little white disc from the CD tray lid.
  11. Place a Disc on the spindle, and cap the disc with the little white piece that you removed from the CD tray cover.
  12. Boot up the PS2 and test it, Continue cleaning until you get it to work.
  13. Put it back together, and you’re in business.
If you have trouble you can send your PS2 to a Repair shop. Click on "Repair Directory" at the bottom of this screen. then choose "Video Game Consoles". Then you pick a Good Repair shop. My shop is listed, but I cannot divulge the name in this forum. Cost will be $25 plus shipping. Shipping is usually $8.95 to the USA
