Was the laptop originally with Windows Vista? If it was, then there may not be a driver for windows xp.

If it was preloaded with XP and it's lot loading the right ethernet adapter from the recovery software or it's not working with the right software, then it's a hardware issue.

Try to access the manufacturer's website from another system to see if there is a driver for the particular system. If there isn't, go to driverguide.com and see if you can get one there.

Best possible solution put back your 40GB and try to get an external casing for your 320GB to see if it works. And try windows on NTFS instead of FPTS, so reformat your 320GB and install the Windows XP again.
I hope this solution is helpful.

Wants to reformat drive when trying to access.

Install the drive as a secondary drive on known working computer. Go into it via windows explorer, locate and backup the files you want on a usb stick or external hard drive. Format the drive, load your OS, and reinstall the files you saved from the drive before you formatted it.

Have you been able to access the drive in the past? If so it might have become corrupt so do a reformat of the drive and format it to NTFS. You can also uninstall and reinstall the drive for your HD before doing this. Pretty much a last resort.

T30 wont reformat

Sounds like you have a faulty hard drive. Can you see or detect the hard drive in the BIOS? To test the hard drive, remove it from the laptop and connect it to a USB hard drive adapter and plug it into a working computer's USB port. If this computer sees it as an external hard drive and you can open the various folders and files, then it os OK and the fault is in the laptop. If the hard drive is faulty, then you need to replace the hard drive in the laptop and install Windows to get the laptop working again.

Hal.dll corrupt or missing

Does the Hard Drive have Windows on it? If not, install the Windows Me Floppy disk. Select Run With CD-ROM Support or RUN With Out CD-ROM Support. Any of the two. After it gets done loading. type the following. fdisk

It will ask you do you want to use extended Hard Drive use? Y/N
Press Y. Then you'll get a screen with 4 options. If Windows is on there type 4. And see what it says on your hard Drive.

If you wish to erase Windows and reinstall it, click 3. to delete the partition and it will ask to restart the computer.

Restart the computer and reload to the fidisk screen and press 1. and it Will install a partition "Not Windows" After the Partition is installed restart the Computer and remove the floppy. If it comes up saying No Operating System found. Then the Hard Drive is set to install Windows.
The cheapest Windows XP you can buy Is Home Edition for $99.98, witch some stores still sell, like BestBuy.

If you want to send the Laptop to me I can install Windows on it for you. I have Windows 95,98,ME,2000 Pro, XP Home, XP Pro and Vista Home Basic. Thats if you don't want to spend money on Windows. Just pay for shipping.

Won't boot up to windows

Because of anti-piracy laws you will not be able to use your XP on the laptop. You will need to buy another xp to Install. Win 2000 pro is very prone to blue screen and crashes. You will need to re-install win 2000 pro.
When you buy and install xp it will reformat (wipe) the hard drive for you.
