If you don't have the original driver disk that came with the computer then you will need to borrow someone's computer to download the driver from www.hp.com. Select "Support & Drivers" and enter your computer model number.
Then copy the driver you downloaded to a writable CD or USB drive so you can transfer it to your computer.

If the laptop is newer than 2001, it won't have a ROMPAQ on the hard drive. That was compaq's system BIOS that had to be installed on the hard drive.
If you go into the system BIOS, make sure that the ethernet is enabled.
If it is, then load into Windows and check the device manager to make sure it is there. If it isn't, a simple fix is to do a system restore to the date it worked.
In windows XP, it's c:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
In windows vista, it's c:\windows\system32\rstrui.exe
