Question about PC Desktops

1 Answer

Low level format

Started a low level format using HUTIL on newly purchased 500gb sata II drive. It was recognized correctly and the format began but hung at 15.65% with a message that read "error" plus something else that I don't remember. I retried every option including read info and diagnostic and same error reported. Is it dead?

Installed secondary sata hard drive. systems recognizes drive but cannot gain access. tried adv sharing settings as administrator but keep getting access denied. tried to reformat but permission denied....

Is the drive at the correct level i.e. FAT32, NTFS in the case of windows, ext2, ext3, ext4 and others for linux. depends on what OS was used previously on this drive. Try to use an OS that supports the drives file system, but since you mention formatting try accessing the drive in the bios and perform a low level format. If it is connected to a raid controller settings in the raid controller will need to be made (normally on servers).

I have a dell optiplex gx 620 put in with new wd sata 500gb hard drive but will only show 130 gb

maybe the hard drive is not yet recognized by the system. try to reformat your hard drive by using disc management. got to control panel, performance and maintenance, administrative tools, computer management. under storage, click disc management, right click on the new hard disc drive and click format.

It appears you have made an error with the RAID configuration. RAID 1 is mirroring and requires an EVEN number of drives unless one is a hot spare. Also, RAID 1 is for redundancy and is slower than a single drive or RAID 0. Verify your RAID configuration and make sure you have RAID 1 and not RAID 0 or RAID 5 which can be an even or odd number of drives.

All you need is a SATA cable. Can be bought anywhere PC parts are sold or on eBay. You can use the screws from your old hard drive. The SATA drive will only work if your motherboard is current. Older M/Bs only accept IDE drives.
