Ohiotom is on-track, only specialty laptops (very rare) have two physical internal hard drives. the D drive is probably a small partition of the primary hard drive and used to store the "backup" used to restore or repair the software and configuration of the original installation. If that's the case its probably time to figure out what is consuming your hard drive storage or save your data to CD and format your hard drive.

I could be wrong about this, but I kind of doubt your laptop has two physical hard drives. It probably has one physical drive that's been set up into multiple partitions. These partitions each get their own letter assignment like "C", and "D".

Double click on "My Computer" and then right click on each of your drives. Here you'll be able to see the capacity of each drive. Do they add up to 80GB?

I know some manufacturers ship their computers with multiple partitions so they have a place to save their restore software in a place where you are unlikely to damage it. If that's what you really have then there probably won't be a great deal of room left on the 2nd drive.

Anyway, let me know if I'm wrong about this...I did not think anybody was putting two physcial HDD's in a laptop.

Do you see the other hard drive in My Computer? If not and the hard drive is setup correctly, you may need to initialize it.

Right click on My Computer from the desktop and click on Manage. Click on Disk Management from the column on the left. Here you should be able to see the other drive.

The Initialize New Disk wizard should prompt you at this time. Proceed through the wizard and you should be able to assign a drive letter to the drive.

Hope this helps :) Kindly leave a rating. Thanks..

From inside windows, there is not a way to do a "switch-a-roo". Does the other hard-drive have an OS installed on it?

If there is no OS installed on the secondary drive (the one with more available space), you can use this as your backup drive. From the primary drive (the one with the OS installed and My Documents), you can move al the data to the secondary drive.

With all the data on the secondary drive, the primary drive will run a lot faster when running programs.

If you decide to go in this direction, defrag both drives after moving the data. This will increase the seek speed for any data on both drives.

Acer Aspire 5002WLMi Laptop won't recognize full 320 Gigabytes of new PATA hard drive. It's always been running a 80 Gigabyte 4200 RPM but that drive is old...a 2005 HD. New WD320 only reads 137...

The BIOS in the ACER determines the maximum size of the hard drive it can support.
Check the laptop's specification to see the max size you can install in this model laptop.
It appears that the max size your laptop can support is 140 Gb (unformatted). 137Gb formatted.

I suggest you install a hard drive up to 140 Gb capacity in your laptop and place the 320 Gb hard drive in an USB hard drive adapter case and when you attach this hard drive to the USB port in your ACER laptop then you will be able to get the full 320 Gb capacity after you delete the partition and create a 320 Gb partition and format the hard drive.

I want to know what type of hard drive I can use in an Aspire 3680.

The specs show an 80 GB hard drive. Probably ATA (you can tell by looking at the end of the drive--if it has a bunch of pins on it, it's ATA. If there are only two connectors, it's a SATA.
You can probably go to 150 GB or so. Don't go too large or you'll be bound to have problems. Mostly there are 120 GB and larger drives out there now. They don't make 80 GB any more.

any laptop Hdd will work as long as you know whether it is SATA or IDE.
The casing around the Hard drive will be different, but can easily be put onto the new drive, but be careful of static and dont drop it
