If you replace you hard drive in a stand alone dvr - can the hard drive be installed straight from the box or will it have to be specially prepared - like formatting etc.

Re: Hard drive not recognized

There will be bespoke dvr software on the drive, this would need to be transferred to the new drive. there may be bespoke formatting as well, check the makers web site

How to get xfinity dvr to play on other tv's?

You have to have the "any room DVR" to have that feature. If you have a stand alone DVR that box is not capable of doing that.

Hard drive failure

The hard drive on our receiver's is built in to the box and can't be replaced. Since the hard drive is failing, I would recommend backing up recordings to an EHD and then having a replacement box sent out.

To use an External Hard Drive just plug it into the receiver, format it, and it will walk you through the rest. If you would like a replacement receiver, you can reach out to me at and I will get you squared away!

ViP211-HD DVR button won't work.....can't record any channels.....also the 'record' button doesn't respond either......

Hello, my name is Matthew Gonzales with DISH Network. I'm sorry about any inconvenience, but the ViP211 is not a DVR receiver. If you have an external hard drive, you can activate the feature on the 211 to allow you to record movies to the external hard drive. It is a one time $40 to activate the external hard drive feature. Also, we can always look at getting a DVR receiver installed to replace the 211. If you have any other questions, feel free to email me at

Can the progams on a DVR hard drive be saved if the unit is not functioning and has to be replaced? If so, what do I need to do? Please advise.

Hey there! Anthony Thomas with DISH Network Customer Service. Unfortunately when a hard drive goes bad or the box itself won't power up, there is no way to recover the recordings. If a hard reset has not helped (unplugging the receiver for a bit and then plug it back in), then the receiver must be replaced to become operational and the recordings are lost. Not good news, but I hope this helps.

You may want to see what it would take to upgrade to a VIP HD DVR, as those can allow an external hard drive between 50 GB and 1 TB to "back up" recordings (activating the feature costs $40). When backed up though, should the receiver ever need replaced it would not be so devastating as the recordings are safely on the external drive, not to mention you can subscribe to HD! When considering the HDD to purchase, this link may help.

My dvr is stuck int the welcom pwering up screen

May be a little too late, but usually the problem is the Hard Drive with that. There are several places online to buy a new hard drive with the proper software already installed or you can buy InstantCake and a blank hard drive and make your own

I want to hook up an external hard drive to increase the record time available for my Motorola DCH3416 cable box. I already have drives with eSata, USB, and firwire ports.

From the Motorola FAQs:

How do I transfer my programs from my Motorola DVR to an external device like a computer or hard drive? trnsp.gif Question How do I transfer my programs from my Motorola DVR to an external device like my computer or hard drive?
trnsp.gif Answer No. Currently you can't offload recorded content to any external device from a Motorola DVR, even though the data ports are there, the software doesn't support it yet. When the option becomes available through a software upgrade, it will be downloaded to DVR automatically by service providers/cable companies.

Check out the website of

They sell Upgrade Kits& larger hard drives for DVRs.

Go to their site and click on DVR Hard Drives... they will ask for the make and model number of your DVR and offer additional and/or replacement Hard Drives for your specific DVR.

They also offer (2) Upgrade Services:

(1.) for $49 they will install your additonal or new Hard Drive

(2.) for $79 they will copy all your setting AND programming to the additional or new Hard Drive.

I have dealt with them before and their email customer service is one of the best I've ever experienced.

Good luck!!!

Does it recognize the hard drive? is the jumper on the back of the drive set on master? Jumper should be all the way to the left. Hard drive also has to be locked in the dvr for it to power up.
