Question about Canon ZR200 Mini DV Digital Camcorder

5 Answers

Cannot view tape playback.

My ZR200 has been around the world and over most of US and Canada. Now, I cannot view the tape thru the viewfinder or the side screen. You can hear the motor "reving". It reves up and then winds down, a flash appears across the screen and then blue background. Then "revs" up, flash, then winds down. Any suggestions?

My Canon ZR200 wont play back...I get gray lines across the screen. It seems like it is recording fine but when you play it back it dispalays gray lines through the screen...I tried to use a cleaning tape but it did not solve the problem. Any help is great...Should I just toss it and buy a new one? Thanks J.

My ZR-200 will not play Mini DVs. The servo motor winds up when play is pressed and winds down ( viewer screen dims when the motor is winding down).

Same problem here. No grey lines. But I get a blue screen, the tape rewinds, forward, plays but no picture just blue screen only. However when I use the SD card. Everything is working. Weird

I am experiencing the exact same problem. Do the cassette heads need to be cleaned or something? I am very disturbed by this problem as my camcorder is rarely used and I have only had it a year. Please help. These things are too expensive to stop working after one year.

I emailed my problem to Canon and this is what they sent me.

"As a first step towards resolving your issue, we suggest that you
restore the camera's default settings. You can reset all of the menu
and button operation settings to default except for Date/Time, Language,
and Video System. To reset these settings, please follow these steps:

1. Please remove the AC adapter and main battery.
2. Please remove the backup battery. It is located behind the main
3. Please turn the POWER SWITCH to camera, then to PLAY/VCR.
4. Then please turn the camera off for approximately 1 minute.
5. Please use a clean pencil eraser to rub the contacts inside the
battery compartment and on the battery.
6. Put both batteries back on the camera.
7. Connect the camcorder to AC adapter.
8. Clean the tape compartment with a dry tape head cleaner.

If the error is not cleared, we recommend you please send the camcorder
in for service."

You might have to do it twice and put a tape to try and record before it works perfectly. It worked for me so hopefully it works for you.

I just had the same exact problem, and I am going on a vacation tomorrow! Too late to take it to a camera shop so I tried the battery tricks-no luck. Fixed the problem by closing the camera up, turned it off, and (lightly) slammed it on the table twice. Works for now. If it acts up again I'll slam it again. Figure there is a loose cable/connector inside the camera that needs some attitude adjusting so that's what I'll give it. If I break the camera, then I'll get a new camera(probably different brand).

My problem fixed when i replaced with a bigger longer lasting battery. Your solution #1 posted sounds good thought. Although I didn't try it, since it fixed replacing main battery.

Horizontal grey lines on tape playback

please state the age of your devices. It can help a great lot in solving your problems. The lines that you get aren't continuous, are they? They appear to be going up and down, are different sizes and shift as the tape plays, yes? well, this is simple. You need to clean your recording head.

You camera is PAL and you are attaching with Ntsc TV or VCR. Both Pal and Ntsc are different systems and incompatible to each other.
If you want to see correct playback of your Camera, it requires Pal or Multi-System color TV.

8mm Samsung camcorder: choppy playback

This seems like a tape playback problem. Can you look at the output of the tape in the camera directly into a monitor? And checking the tapes on another machine would also be good.

The fast movement breakup can be something in the playback circuitry of the camera. It may not show up in the viewfinder. Also yo umay try repacking the tape. Fast forward it to the end and rewind it all the way.
