Unable to format memory card

By kalbar on Nov 27, 2007

" "
I recently purchased an Scan Disk 2.0gb memory card for the above camera. When I turned the camera on after putting in the new card, an message came up, telling the cards was unformatted and did I want to format it. I pushed the OK button and the camera got about half way through formatting the card ( you can very briefly see a progress indicator, as it flashes up on the camera's diplay screen
) when an error message comes up saying "unable to format. The card appears to be OK

You mentioned in your post "the above camera", but I can't find the make/model of your camera? Check on the manufacturer's website to see what the largest capacity card can be used in your camera. Knowing the make/model and searching for the message on the internet can yield better answers to your question.

If this satisfies your question, please rate it FixYa!

- Original user: I still don't know the make/model of the camera, please supply it, or use the following suggestions below to fix your issue as well. Try a smaller or different card.

Coolpix 8700 user:
You must format the card using the camera because the computer formats cards differently. The camera formats at FAT32. The computer may be formatting to a different setting.

I ALWAYS do not delete or format the card after downloading. One reason is because it's slower, second reasons is that I use the card as a backup, just in case something goes wrong, at least until I'm prepared to use the card and camera again, third, I then format the drive using the camera so the card's format type is compatible with the camera.

Olympus 450 user:
The only cards that are compatible are the (Internal) 3.3V SmartMedia 8MB and (external) sizes 2MB - 128MB. 2GB is not a supported size. See this link.

Please rate a FixYa! ThankYa!
