FINE TUNING TAPE FILES

Hi
We are using a number of tape files in our jobs for processing. If one job is using a tape file the other job has to wait until the file has been released by the previous file. It takes a long time and this delays our batch cycle when the data is more. Is there a way to read the tape files simultaneously by multiple jobs. Please provide options to fine tune reading tape files

No. That's the problem with tapes. Time to move to magnetic or flash media

Backup tape(RDX) getting ejected automatically after sometime while backup job is not running.

RDX tape drives, by HP (tandenberg)
did you reload all that HP software and drivers fresh?
did you try fresh tape.
i replace the tape drive, (new , used, NOS , from whom, ebay)

i bet the tape drive, logs errors, if you look,
the driver software will log that, and you can see why the tape
failed, my guess, damage to the tape, end to end.
try fresh new tape, NEW in a box, not used.

I have a Seagate Tapestor 20GB tape drive. I have upgraded to a XP driver but the software does not recognize the tape media to do a backup.

Try to use a cleaning cartridge. If the tape drive is still not recognizing the tape media after you clean it then your heads are bad

I plug in the printer and it keeps feeding the tape printing "junk". I am using it with Aloha and I currently have the same model printer that is a loaner working perfectly. I don't know if this is a...

Your last print job might have crashed, but it's still trying to send data to the printer.
If you have a Windows system, Go to Printers from the Control Panel and double-click on the printer. If you see any print jobs listed, choose File/Cancel All Documents.

But sometimes that doesn't work - then follow these steps to get rid of all stuck print jobs:

  1. Start –> Run Type “services.msc” without quotes
  2. Find PrintSpooler and Stop the service
  3. Navigate to C:WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SPOOL\PRINTERS and delete all files in the folder.
  4. Next Repeat Step 1 and Start the PrintSpooler Service.
Hope that helps - Sam

HI TLD tape drives are writing with low transfer rate. we are using veritas netbackup 6.5.3 verision

Hi,
The low throughput may be because of many factors. Check the below factors.. It could improve your throughput.
1. Restart and disable any antivirus firewall on both backup server and client. The network utilization should be more than 20% in the master backup server. Just to make sure there is no hinderence to data flow, try copying a single big file (a 1Gig ISO file will do) from any server to backup server, the network utilization should shoot above 10% then. And will vary to 20%. If it is steadt @ 8 or 10% then firewal is the culprit. Disable it.
2. Team 2 or 3 NICs in the master backup server. Teaming at the client will also help.
3. Check the total size of data to backup, and the average size and number of files to backup, if the average size is in the range of KBs and the number of files is very high. Then only the 'Flash Backup Liscence" will only help.
Please come back and post the ratings for my solution if it turn to be of any use to you. Thnx

I am using HP DDS-3, I had stored data on this tape and it got full and asked for another tape. I cancelled the operation and took a remaining data on a new tape. now when i try to access the tape it shows...

start over process and dont cancel because the backup file is unique and this has several disks (if needed), and only all disks put togelher you can retrive data inside. like rar files, same principle.

Symantec Backup Exec 11d compression

Unfortunately, the data types you described are already compressed.
Your hardware and software cannot compress it any further. In fact, compressing compressed files actually increases the file sizes. Don't worry, Backup Exec knows better than to compress compressed files so you can leave your settings in place.

The compressed capacity of a tape drive is a marketing ploy by the tape backup industry to make them more appealing. Yes, if your backup consisted entirely of uncompressed files you might get close to 75GB but never 80GB. You can only count on getting the uncompressed capacity of a tape.

Three options:
Obviously, a higher capacity tape drive will resolve this problem.
You could also swtich to using two tapes but you would have to load the second tape when you arrive for work in the morning and your backup would have to finish during the business day.
Finally, if you have some data that does not change frequently you could seperate it from your active data. Backup the active data on your regular backup. Now you can backup the "archived" data manually with a separate backup job. Once backed up you only have to back it up again when new data is added to the archive.

I hope this helps.

Time Out Error

This is from Xante's 3G Manual (downloadable via PDF)
"Printer Timeout The Timeout feature allows you to select the number of seconds the
printer waits for additional data before cancelling a job and returning
to the READY/IDLE state.
Set Timeout from the MISC:TIMEOUT configuration menu. The
factory default of 40 seconds (40 Sec) is an average setting. Set
timeout according to the type of files you send. Use a low setting for
small, simple files to prevent an indefinite tie-up on one job. Use the
300 or Never setting for large files, such as graphic intensive or CAD
(Computer Aided Design) files, to allow enough processing time.
With the NEVER selection, the printer does not timeout; it waits
until it receives additional data or until the printer is reset."

It may help with your issue and does detail block size changes on some systems.
