Haier HTQ21JSS - Freezer works fine but fridge won't cool

I have a Haier top freezer refrigerator and all of a sudden yesterday i noticed the fridge part is not cooling. I've turned it up to 5 today with no change and turned it back down. It's running non-stop and my energy bill is running with it. I cannot afford a new fridge right now, is there anything I can do? I've checked for build up in the freezer and dont see much. I have noticed the seal around the door is not as tight as it should be, but i've been diligent about making sure its closed tightly, especially as i'm watching this issue the last 2 days. What should I do? Please help...

Hi Bob...my apologies for not stating much..i believe my frustration to have gotten the better of me. I defrosted the unit after realizing that the vents from the freezer to the fridge were totally blocked with ice. Once i defrosted, i plugged it back in and it is working. However, i'm concerned that this may occur again, likely, as it did once. I am going to follow through with your suggestions this weekend and see what i find.
Being that the vents were plugged with ice, could there also be an issue with my defrost element, thermostat or timer? If so, how do i narrow it down to the correct one, trial and error? =)
Thanks so much for your help...

RFGirl,

Thanks for the feedback! In many cases, the problem is just humid conditions or door not closed. You'll know more in about 2-3 weeks. If the defrost cycle takes over, you'll get no further problems. Sounds like you're getting away easy!!

RFGirl, you didn't give me much...that said, try a full defrost of the unit. You probably have a buildup of ice caused by condensation. This is probably because the door seal isn't doing its job well. If the coils that do the cooling are not exposed, you must either wait for a full defrost...about 2 days or figure out how to remove the covering panels and go about melting the ice. If you do, be sure that any heating equipment...like a hair dryer...be kept from getting wet. If this happens again, you probably have low gas levels in the box...you'll need a tech. Be sure you unplug the box.

How to check for low gas: Once the unit is defrosted, start it up with the coil covers off...after about 5 minutes, you should see an even coat of frost at both ends of the coils. If not, wait 5 minutes more. If still not, you're low. Alternate method: Go round back and find the compressor...the big black thing. It has a couple of pipes sticking out. The largest is the suction line. Start the unit. Wait about 5 minutes. It will frost up. It should either get dry or form liquid condensate on it if you've got enough gas. If it stays frosted, you're low.

Hope this helps.

Freezer not freezing and fridge not cooling

Check the back wall of the freezer for ice buildup.
If yes, a defrost parts problem.
Check the freezer fan. Is it running?
If no, replace the freezer fan.
Check the condenser fan at the compressor. Is it running?
If no, is compressor hot?
If compressor is hot replace condenser fan motor.
If compressor is not hot.
Replace the compressor start relay.

Fridge and Freezer losing cooling

we bought a f&p fridge freezer and in summer noticed it wasn't cooling and the freezer wasn't freezing, when the service guy came out he noticed our ducted air con was blowing onto the fridge, once we had redirected the air con outlet the fridge started working as normal, apparently f&p's work on air being convected around the cabinet of the fridge and air blowing on the fridge can effect the temperature of the convected air. hope this helps you or someone
