Question about Sony Audio Players & Recorders

4 Answers

I have Sony cassette deck which was working fine until today. The door won't close when a cassette is inside, but will otherwise close fine without a tape in it. What could be causing this problem?

The deck itself is a Sony TC-FX505R.

Hello again Johnny, thank you for your comments, you are very considerate
I was looking for the service manual of your Sony TC-FX505R and could not locate it, I found if the model TC-FX510, which has a similar mechanism, there note that, you can remove the lid of the door to better see the interior of the cassette holder
Before putting the Cassette, observe that the head is in position to read the tape, if you look at it, there is a problem of alignment of the mechanics, with the possibility of some damaged piece, that makes this happen, also observe that both rollerball, are down, that none are in contact with their corresponding capstan axis
In this case you should look for a qualified technical service
to verify the chances of recovery of your Sony
I am a bit far away to be able to assist you personally, I hope you have served my comments

Thanks again! The right roller is actually up in contact with the capstan (the left roller is down). I guess there's nothing else to do but take it to a technician. Thank you!!

Make sure the cassette is seated fully in the cassette cradle. Also, try other cassettes just in case the one you are trying is too thick for the player. Also, the spring on the eject button isn’t sticking or broken. If it’s broken or if the lever inside that is pushed back by the cassette, the ejection lever, is sticking out instead of being pushed back, it won’t allow the cassette to be fully seated and thus the door won’t shut.

Hello Johnny, it would be good if you publish what model of Sony cassette player you have, in the same way, observe if when you put the cassette in the cassette door, it stops so that it is in line with the reel seat,
If this does not happen, it may have broken the stop that determines this position in the door and the cassette goes lower, hindering the correct closing of the door
Greetings Franco Dosil

SOURCE: Left Deck Door Stuck Shut on Cassette Deck

The cassette mechanism has a large gear that rotates to different positions for the different modes. On time around is a play - stop cycle. It is stuck in one position and won't come around to the stop spot. Need to take the cover off and help it to turn to get the cassette out. Then figure out if something is wrong preventing it from turning or if the wheel driving it is the problem. They are all a little different so this is where your mechanical apptitude comes in.
By the way, you'll figure out right away they don't intend these things to be fixed.
Hope Ya Fix It.

SOURCE: Door won't open

It might be a model that has a special IC that allows the door to open and close.

You'll need to take the case off.

try hifiengine.com...that site may have the service manual.

SOURCE: Sony Dual-Deck Cassette Player/Recorder, doors won't close

Are both sides not staying shut? If it's only one side, look to see if the latch is broken. You should see an arm move when you press down the eject button - while the door is open, press the eject button and see where the arm moves. You should see a hook that catches the door and keeps it closed. It could be broken, or just jammed. Look at the other side of the deck and see it it looks like it's working the same. Unjam the latch arm if it's stuck, or replace it if it's broken.

SOURCE: Sony Handycam CCD-TR64 cassette door won't close

Common problem with this mechanism. In order to fix the problem you will have to replace part called CHASSIS LS. Expensive repair, probably not worth the effort.

Sometimes the tape sensors or record sensor gets bent or out of place so the door wont shut. Look for something like that.

Hi amitchell47,
The rubber belts that turns the gears is already worn out. Usually, there are two rubber belts in a cassette deck. You have to replace both belts. I hope everything works out. Good luck.

Tape will not turn

The more detailed the description of the problem, the better for diagnosing the root cause. Thanks.

It sounds like you have a couple of problems. I'll address them as you have them numbered above.

1. Decks typically have belts to drive the various 'reel' mechanisms. Therefore, they can slip without breaking anything inside the machine or the tape. Your first symptom leads me in that direction.

2. That it migrated is mysterious, unless Sony is using a common motor to handle both decks' reel duties.

3. This symptom may have something to do with the root cause of both sides jamming...

Do the cassette well doors come off, say, for cleaning? Could they be dislodge? If so, they may have something to do with the jamming problems in # 1 and #2 as the doors play a part in positioning the cassette and holding it in place against the reel motor cogs. How do the doors operate with NO tape inserted?

Does it take excessive force to close the door only WITH a tape? make sure the tape is fully seated before closing the door. The capstans (directly below each reel cog) have to engage through the small holes at the lower edge of the cassette. They should be straight and clean. Any dirt or oxide on them will cause problems as these are what move the tape at the precise speed necessary for good playback or recording.
---

My hipshot recommendation, otherwise, is to look around inside the cassette wells very carefully for any foreign matter, debris, dust bunnies.

Do you maintain the deck as recommended?
