Problem with scanned documents using Ricoh Aficio 5500

Hi,
We are having a problem with our Ricoh MP5500 machine. About half the time, when we scan a document (multi-page PDF), it comes through as a bunch of gobbledy-gook characters -- NOT a PDF file! We have tried changing the scan settings (text/photo versus text, etc.), but nothing seems to work. It doesn't do it all the time, but happens randomly, and more and more often. We have had the machine for 2 years -- it has only started doing this in the past month.

The Troubleshooting manual mentions nothing about this.... We are not getting any kind of error message.

Any ideas?
Thank you!
Rose.

If the printer came with operating software you should use it to scan the document. Even without the manufacturer software (but not the drivers) you can use Acrobat or Word Perfect or LibreOffice to scan to the application then save the scanned file either as pdf, image format, or as text (OCR).
There are some free scanning software available on the Internet: freeOcr, pdfViewer, Paperscan Free edition They are usually able to send the file to an application or save in a specific format. If they are not able to scan a multipage document you will have to scan one page at a time then assemble the pages

Printer shows offline/Scanner has no destination list

You must program the email addresses in the machine address book, so that you will have a destination list to scan to email.
You can also try to scan by pressing the Scanner button to access the scanner function and input the email address manually by selecting manual, and then press the Start button to scan the document.

Problem in scanner when scan

Try adding the scanner's IP address in the scnhosts file in the TWAIN folder. Format is similar to the windows hosts file. You'll see a commented out sample entry, just modify that to suit your needs.

This may or may not work for you; we had it working under this configuration but then it stopped for no apparent reason. also note that scanrouter isn't supported under vista. Only advice I've been given so far is to revert to sending scans via SMTP - not ideal!

Does your machine have a document feeder on it? If so, turn off and unplug the machine from the wall, and check in back of the machine to see if the feeder is plugged into the unit properly. Try reseating the document feeder plug to ensure good contact. Plug the machine back into the wall and turn it on. If it detects the document feeder, fax and scan functions should be restored.
