My dell inspiron 1100 wont turn on. When I try to turn it on with just the battery, the power light blinks once and goes out, then the battery light blinks orange and green a few times and then goes out. When I try it with the power cord attached, the power light doesnt come on at all- the battery light just blinks orange and green and turns off. What could be the problem other than the automatic hybernation switch?

Could be loose battery pack. A bad memory chip would do this as well. Sounds like your not getting power.
Try this,
Unplug it, remove battery, wait couple minutes, press and hold the power button for 5 full long seconds, wait couple minutes more, then put battery back in securely, then plug in, turn back on.
it looks like the battery is defective. try reseat the battery while the power cord plug in to see if that help. if you remove the battery and leave the power cord plug in, the battery symbol indicator light will turn off. Time to order a replacement battery.
If it's blinking 9 times then it's likely telling you one or more of the RAM sticks are in need of replacement.
To check these, remove the laptops power cord and battery, then locate and remove, the cover for the RAM.
Remove one chip at a time and try booting the laptop.
