Question about LaCie Computers & Internet

Open Question

LaCie d2 CD/DVD writer firewired to a 2007 iMac has stopped recognising there's a DVD in the drive.

I can see the d2 using Disk Utility in the Mac's Applications but it says there's no media loaded when there is. Is this a hardware problem with the d2 itself or a communication problem between the Mac and the writer?

SOURCE: lacie d2 external drive

I support the comments of (fire sine) I have the d2 120gb Lacie and it was down for two years.  I took it to my apple guys and they said that I needed to go to a data recovery service which would cost a gang of money.  Come to find out, when I decided to update my internal hard drive on my Mac Pro, I had to buy a SATA, IDE, USB 2.0 adapter to back up the internal and transfer to the new internal. Long story short, something said, Hey try and open the Lacie and bypass the board in the enclosure and connect directly to the Western Digital drive inside.  AND WHALA! I got my info, so all I need is a new enclosure.

SOURCE: LaCie d2 Quadra drive... not showing up on PC after working on a MAC

You need to make sure the drive is formatted for the PC. The Mac will read and write to a FAT32 partition, but the PC cannot see a Mac formatted drive as you have seen.

The only problem is that there is a 32Gb limit per partition for FAT32 drives.

It's not ideal but it's the best you can do easily.

Firewire connector doesn't match

It sounds like you may have one of the newest MBPs that doesn't have a firewire port. If that is the case, it is still possible to connect firewire peripherals through a Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter cable.

External Super Writemast DVD drive is connected via Firewire. The S.M.A.R.T. status says "Not Supported" on my imac os 10.6.6

Hello,
The S.M.A.R.T. status is used to communicate information about a Hard Disk Drive.
Since your product is a DVD drive, it not does send S.M.A.R.T. information so MAC list it as "Not Supported" for that feature.
It is normal with a DVD drive and you have nothing to worry about.

Just got an lg ge20 not working on mac

I wish I could tell you that your Mac is compatible with the LG GE20 20X DVD Burner but unfortunately it is not.

Here are the system requirements for this burner
LG GE20 20X DVD Burner Technical Specifications

The CD included is not the only item that is not compatible with the Mac, it is also the DVD burner itself. It is only windows compatible I'm afraid.

However, I do know that the Apple.com online store, has a comparable DVD+RW burner, the
LaCie 22x d2 DVD+RW with LightScribe
which will work with your iMac.

This is a genuine incompatibility issue.

If you had an Intel iMac, there actually is a workaround process where virtual machine software, like VMWare Fusion or Parallels, could be installed, with a version of Windows XP, Vista, or 7, display as a 2nd terminal within a Mac OS X desktop.

What's makes this effective, is that the LG GE20 could work with a windows virtual machine and because software like VMWare for example, can share devices, including optical CD/DVD drives, the Mac could share that drive with the windows virtual machine.

But since you do not have an Intel iMac, unless I am reading the description of your Mac computer(Apple iMAC Mac Notebook) incorrectly, the LaCie burner information, I provided above, would be the best option for your model of iMac.

Again, if I have described your model of Mac incorrectly let me know and I will be glad to assist further.

Regards,

LaCie Case and new IDE drive not communicating with my MAC

It sounds like you have power but the communication method is not working. I assume it is a usb drive, (or it is firewire 400, firewire 800? How do you have it hooked up to the Mac? If you are using usb, I would try using a different usb cable. Same for firewire. You also might read your manual on the Lite-On drive is see if you have to throw some dip switch make it a master or slave setting on IDE.

Macintosh computer not recognizing the LaCie external hard drive

1. If you have another firewire device test this device with the same firewire cord you are currently useing for the LaCie. (if there is no reasponse form the other device then it is the cord it's self) If not then 2. Check the Leads on the back of the LaCie where the firewire plugs in if the copper looks tarnished use a ear swab dipped in Lime Away or CLR to clean it then wait for it to dry and try the cord again. 3. if these physical connections are in good connection with each other and the firewire in port on your computer and on the LaCie are good then. Run a "Permissions" verify and repair through the disk utility program on your Mac with the LaCie turned on and plugged in.
FINALLY if none of these options repair the LaCie you may have to open the LaCie up and check to make sure the soldering from the firewire to the chip set is still in tact. I hope this helps Happy Macing.

Can't accept Quadra 500 on my owerMac G5 Quad

Scrap LAcie!! Sounds like in this case, it may have been jostled around during shipping. None the less, Lacie drives are nothing more than bricks waiting to fail. Go Western Digital, but if oyu can, zip straight for Seagates!!!! Professional grade!! ALways check the cables, the ones that come with them are bottom bin cables, made by little singapore children with no fingers..... Invest in a good cables...a drive is only as good as the weakest datalink.

Cash on the warranty!!!

Keep me posted.
