Question about Hobart Food Mixers

After information on HOBART SE 601 SE601 stand mixer regarding grease!

I have acquired an old but in good condition Hobart SE601 stand-mixer. all Hobart can tell me is that production stopped mid 70s. mainly i would like to know if they require grease or oil in the main gearbox? the newer models use oil and a slinger to spread the oil about in the 60qt machines. what was in the gearbox when we opened it up looked like grease but it was so old that it could have being anything 30 or 40+ years ago when it started in there. also if grease or oil, how much to put into the gearbox?

How do I empty and then refill the grease in the gear box of my 30 quart Hobart mixer

Transmission has to be somewhat disassembled, grease removed, lower seal should be replaced and then grease added and reassembled. Not that easy to do. Check www.hobartservice.com for your local Hobart office.

Oil leak

instead of putting a gasket on tell him to take out all of the old grease out that is what has broken down and turning into oil causing a leak and if he can repace the seal around the agitator shaft replace the old grease with a high temp bearing grease or a good quality lithium grease

Hobart N50

Some of the N50's were packed with a white grease. It tends to seperate. So the oil portion finds it's way out. It sounds like it is getting into the motor case, and is running down the inside of the column. Hobart now uses a brown clay based grease --- Darina 2.

If the amounts are small, and the mixer is not excessively noisy, I wouldn't be concerned. If you wanted to fix it, the transmission would need to be removed, cleaned, and repacked. For a Hobart tech, 3 hours labor, $45 grease, plus parts.

Noisy Hobart N50 Mixer

First, there is a double set screw (one on top of the other - if they are both there) towards the back of the planetary.

Remove the first screw, it should have a normal tip, not pointy. Run the mixer in 1st and adjust the screw, first out then in. Then repeat in 3rd. You should clearly hear a difference.

If not, you probably need to repack the grease in the transmission. The proper grease is called "Darina II". It's expensive ~ $35 per mixer.

Hobart A-200 serial # ?

Hi. Your mixer was manufactured in 1967. If you plan on keeping it, take the outer cover off, gently remove the two metal dust caps with a small screwdriver and look into each opening with a good flashlight to determine the quality and amount of grease in the trans. case.

Ideally the grease should almost fill the space with no oil visible. If you need to look further, I suggest that you open up the transmission cover, to determine the condition of the grease that lubricates the transmission. If you find that oil is seperating from the grease. you would do well to remove all of the oil and old grease and replace it with either Shell Darina EP-2, or Chevron FM ALC EP-2 grease. It's a messy job, but it will add years of life to your mixer.

Check the planetary seal, remove, clean and regrease the planetary gearing. With a mixer of this age, you never know if it has ever been serviced since it's manufacture or not. The grease must totaly encapsulate the trans. gears. As the grease breaks down it's level lowers and it leaves some of the upper gears without lubrication, and will result in preventable wear.

Good luck! If you found this solution helpful, please rate it. ricardok45

Old hobart s-30 mixer oil

man you got an oldie but goodie mixer!im a hobart service tech for 8 years and have only seen about two dozen, unfortuantly parts for these units are exhuasted.as for the sight glass they do become cloudy over time and you cant determine the oil level.use a heavy gear case oil.the only way of telling is to drain the oil or if the unit is loud you should probably cange the oil.
