Cd/dvd rom drive just stopped working

2 cd/dvd rom drives just stopped working this week. Both were working last week, as I installed Office 2007. The strange thing about this is they both show up on boot up, in "my computer", and in hardware. Both drives recognize an XP cd, office cd, but won't recognize an adobe CS4 cd or anything like that (any web design software). When I put in the adobe cd, the drive thinks there is no cd in it. When I put in my XP pro cd, it reads it fine. I have installed all the updates up through current for XP Pro. Have unistalled both drives, reinstalled till I am blue in the face, and have physically removed the cables and power and reconnected them, switched them from master to slave and vice versa between the two of them. I am at a loss what is going on, and how to fix it. I have a college assignement due friday using the Adobe cd, so if I can't install it, I am in big trouble. What is wrong and how do I fix it?
