Yes, it can. Internal memory is just there so you can try the camera out, but to effectively use it you must have a memory card. You can of course try to set the camera to lower resolution. That will give room for more pictures, but of lesser quality.
Try reformatting the memorycard to see if that helps avoiding memory errors. It should be there in the setup menu somewhere.
